switchres / 320 x 240 issue with Sony trinitron CRT
« on: February 06, 2014, 05:38:48 pm »
Hello,

I'm nearly at the finishing stages of my project build ( thread to follow soon in the projects section ) , but had a set back last year, when i accidentally damaged my original Panasonic CRT. Prior my my accident, everything ran great.

It was running Soft15hz and quickres.. Mame config was set to "switchres 1" and all my games seem to fit / look great.

I recently managed to source a replacement CRT. But this was a sony 29" instead.

Unfortunately, 90% of the games no longer work and once the game is selected in mala, the screen goes out of range.
This seems to be down to this crt not liking 320 x 240.

if i change the switchres to 0, the games run, but stretched or cut off.

i can run them at 640 / 480 and this kind of solves the cut off issue, but then messes up some of the other games that dont use the 320 x 240 resolution.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to how i can run the games that require 320 x 240 using switchres, so all the games work correctly

thanks

not sure if youve probably already done it, but going into the service menu of your tv you can adjust the vertical stretch and make it a bit smaller

that combined with arcade osd to tweak the resolution even more should resolve the problem, if you go into arcade osd and select the resolution you want to tweak, select vertical, and mess around with it there

you have between about 14.8khz - 16.3khz to play with depending on the tv, some have a slightly narrower amount before the resolution scrambles, but you will definitely be fine between 15khz and 16khz

the higher you go towards 16khz you less stretched the image will be vertically, then the lower you go to 15khz the more stretched it will be, i mean theres not a massive amount in it but you can get some extra pixels out of it this way
