To the fighter game audience, how would you rate this game for its time?  Does it hold up years later?

Well they weren't good when they were released, so my guess would be no, they do not.  ;)

The original was better, it was like ghetto WCW, the second was considerably worse.

Ffny is amazing. As a serious fighter it doesn't really hold up but still awesome brawler with at least some depth. I loved this game so much when it was new the story mode is amazing.

Fair enough, but the WCW games were still better, so even then it was sub-par.
