Best office chair for LONG hours?
« on: January 24, 2014, 10:42:09 am »
I'm thinking of splurging on a pricey "ergonomic" chair for the office.

Anyone have a favorite model that's good for sitting 10 or 12 hours straight?

Part of me also wants to modify a standard chair to perform like an expensive one....

Ergogenesis.

$1,500ish but my lower back pain went from a constant 8-9 to a 2-3 when I had that thing.  They make a big and tall fat bastard version with a flat seat which I highly recommend.

Unless you like seat humps pushing into your taint all day.  Was quite popular with the women at that job....

It's a goofy named company in a goofy little Texas town, but at least they're made in America and it's a good product.

This is what I have at work, not an ultra pricey model, but never had back problems with it and right now I work 10-12 hour days, 5 days a week. The biggest downfall is that the arm height is not as adjustable as I would like. I wished the arms went a tad lower since my desk is low. Otherwise, if I start feeling any back stiffness it is easy to adjust many different points of the chair. Good lumbar support and it has adjustment for the back and seat angle. Had it for 4 years and still looks brand new. I do the ergonomics at my company, and these chairs seem to be very well received, and nobody needs to purchase additional lumbar supports for them.

In the world of ergonomics, things like those wacky kneeling chairs really only force you into a better posture. The trick is to just find a chair that is both comfortable and it feels natural to sit properly. A $5000 ergonomic chair means nothing if you don't feel comfortable sitting properly, and to be honest, I have found that desk and monitor height can be far more important of a factor than the chair itself.

I rock one of these at work and I have to say it's not a bad chair.  The only set back is the arm rests are the exact height of my desk so if I'm not paying attention I'll roll forward and bang the chair into the desk.  At first I didn't notice but now it has gotten past annoying.  These chairs at times can be too comfortable and it feels like I'm sitting in a lazy boy and that can be a downfall when you get in at 6 am and don't leave until 530 pm.  I've caught myself falling asleep a couple times after a heavy lunch.   :)

Thanks.  Haven't decided exactly how crazy I wanted to go on price, although being comfortable all day would be priceless.

In reality the only way to do that is to not sit for 12 hours a day.  Your body is always going to adjust to the conditions and be unhappy with that arrangement.  Best defense against it is being in better condition so your body is getting its physical needs met in spite of sitting all those hours.  It's a battle we all fight and it's a battle we're all losing to one degree or another.

Very true, all of us desk jockeys are best served getting up and moving around at least a time or two per hour. I find that it is easily possible at lease a few times in the morning and then several in the afternoon to break it up.

Also watch how you sit. I was having extreme pain in my back/neck went to get checked out...after all questions turns out I was leaning w/o knowing it...at work, in the car and at my home office. I have to make an effort not to lean and pain is long gone.  Losing a bunch of weight and getting back in shape helped a lot too.

Not to detract from that gif, but those kind of chairs on a slick floor are just asking for disaster.  My high school had them in their pavilion and every damn event somebody would go flying off those things.

Not to mention a weight limit of just over 200lbs.
A full size adult can sit in one just fine...but add a couple of kids in your lap and you had beter sit real still. The slightest tweak and the legs buckle probably around 250 to 275. This weight limit shrinks as the chair ages.
