Huh.  I don't think that would fly up here in the states.  I'm not a contractor though, so don't know code that well...  Just not used to seeing anything other than sheathing on a residence.

Well yeah,  I said earlier in the thread that construction standards are probably not as rigorous here in Australia as they are in the US or Europe/UK, we don't have snow or very cold weather to contend with, extreme heat is a problem in some areas though.

I'm not a roofer but I've worked on a few...The standard at least in California for as long as I can remember is wood paneling(nowadays OSB chipboard), tar paper, and then whatever shingles you have...I'm sure there are some differences for tile roofs and other styles. This is for the majority of single family homes. Higher density housing apts etc can use flat tar roofs like many business complexes that is also the majority for non-residential buildings.

I think it comes down to cost. these two styles are the cheapest...

Good to hear it's covered.

Definitely have them create an opening when they redo it, so you can throw plastic totes up there for extra storage.

I haven't read all the posts, but why has the ceiling collapsed? Water damage from a leaking pipe?

And yes, tiles or corrugated iron are the roofing mainstays in Australia. Might seem weird to Americans, but then to us, making a roof from chipboard and then covering it with tar and stones seems rather strange  ;D

...... and the cause? Vibration in the uninsulated ceiling caused by wind, particularity on the edges.   He was critical of the lack of glue and fixing points where ceiling meets wall and says this is where the loosening begins due to wind pressure.  He's not wrong about the wind, we live on the top of a hill and we recently had many weeks of seemingly endless strong winds, my garage doors rattle like mad with it.  Insulation in the roof greatly lessens the effect.
