Voltron: Defender of the Universe
« on: January 08, 2014, 01:15:30 am »
I downloaded the PS3 demo a long time ago and I thought it mildly interesting. My son has grown to like it and I finally to pay up for the full version from PSN.

Not having connected in a while I allowed the PS3 to go through all the updates. Then I notice the PSN store changed and the massive collection sucks ass. Uh oh... this can't be good. Thought I had until 2015 for the downsizing. Type in Voltron and all I get back are the crap movies.

Go straight to the game and try to "unlock" it there. Nothing. Unable to find the product. ---fudgesicle---.....

A quick Google search turns up tons of references but virtually no mention of what happened until I find a blurb dated from 2012 that the game was quietly removed from XBLA. Crap has it been that long? Great now I feel my remaining $18 credit is now wasted.

This is EXACTLY the reason I hate download only games.

Any ideas on what I can do now? I'd ask if there was ever a disc version but that seems pointless.

Learn not to keep credits on your video game accounts?

Seriously I don't know how the psn works, but on the Wii U there is a button to add the exact amount of funds in eshop points from your credit card when you want to purchase a particular thing.  It's quite refreshing from xbl's "spend X dollars on a card and have $2.50 left when you buy your game"

Voltron is obviously a licensed property and they could no longer sell the game once the license expired.  This is why I warn of the dangers of a digital only gaming system.  The Wii U still supports physical discs and it is the ONLY next-gen console to do so (both the xbone and Ps4 are using the discs as a glorified license key and if I'm not mistaken both verify the install via a net connection).  This is quite frightening if you ask me.  I was hoping that the ps4 and xbone would both bomb big-time solely because of this, but alas consumers are too dumb to realize what they are buying.

Sorry, personal rant... I just don't like the direction console gaming is going.  I just paid 20 dollars for a physical copy of a game that is currently 7 dollars in the eshop.  I did so to ensure I could play it decades from now and also to support physical media.

I whole heartedly agree. But I didn't just put those funds willy nilly on there. The funds are from a PSN gift card when I mentioned I wanted Castle Crashers. So rather than buy an exact amount, the gifter rounded it off. $50 IIRC. I refuse to use my Credit Card because Sony ---fouled up beyond all recognition--- up with their security three or four years ago. Remember that? But yeah, I ---smurfing--- hate the whole DLC ---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow---. I gave my son a hard copy of Minecraft 360 because I feared this exact problem.

Anyways. I found out the publisher was THQ which went belly up in 2013. Not sure why the game would be pulled as early as 2012. But I don't have exact dates so those two events might have been just weeks apart. The developer, however, is still active. I find that strange. A game published exclusively online and a publisher is still needed? Why? With companies like Valve self publishing their three self made titles and 9/10ths of the entire indie scene, you would think that kind of traditional arrangement with THQ would be a pointless exercise.

I hold no hope now. The only chance is the developer deciding to republish on the PS3. Not likely given the PS4's introduction and Sony's raping of the entire PSN store. I suppose modding my PS3 might be doable but I haven't kept up with that scene and now that I allowed my system to update, I might've pooched myself. Nevermind the likelyhood such a game image would even be available on that scene. :banghead:

Guess I'll have to blame this on on Santa.  :'(

If you're past 3.55 you are pooched.  You might can find a COBRA USB Dongle but I think thats just for booting ISOs not PSN games, I dont know for sure.

Howard, you can buy stuff for the exact amount on Xbox now. It's been that way for quite a while.

Not sure if it matters. I think I found more people talking about Game.com ROMs than I did talking about PSN images. I haven't kept up with the latest news after the ring 0 key was found. Is there still an active community trying to bust the 3.55+ nut?

At least the Kindle is distracting him. :embarassed:

I dont keep that active with it, just that you need 3.55 to put the new CFWs on. That Voltron game got tanked in the reviews, lol

Sure, it sucks when things are yanked digitally, but it also sucks when you can't get a copy of an old game for a reasonable price.

I bought Kingdom Hearts for 3DS for $10 shipped on clearance several months ago.  I literally tossed it inside a pinball machine and forgot about it.  Last week, I pull it out and I'm told, "that's rare, out of print, and worth a lot of money."  Today, I glance at E-bay and it looks like $30ish shipped for a used copy.  That's not exactly a LOT of money but that's ridiculous for a mid-level game that old.  At least it explains why Malenko was all over my tits trying to get it for $5 last month.

You may not like the digital price, but at least it's fixed and available.

Tell that to a six year old. Hell, my thirteen year old won't admit it but she's always playing Barbie on the Wii. IMHO if you can't get Ken to steal the pony and rape Barbie then what's the point?

Either that, or the next artwork package for your 2014 UCA Bartop nominee.

I was thinking of GTA when I wrote that.

TBF though the Voltron demo really isn't as bad as the reviewers are saying. I put it in the same vein as TMNT or Simpsons arcade with a different perspective. Kind of fun to play with my six year old.

My only real gripe is even on a 60" screen it can be hard to see the ground meat in the chaos.

I think I offered you $5 + shipping or said $5 cash in hand.   You said no, the end. bit of a stretch to say I was all over your chad tits

I wonder if it might be a good idea to pick up an extra PS2 from Fleabay and mod it for my son? I see a few auctions there in the $50's.
