winrar issue

I have a full set of good merge roms for nes and others and cant get any to run in any emulator. my guess is im not transferring them a zip file right with winrar. I go to set extract here open folder select all archive and check the zip and delete rar file so not both copies in folder and lastly I go to the file tab and select separate folder it changes to zip but I point mess or other emulator to rom file it brings up nothing or says missing files or corrupt, all my mame worked great and is up and running just wanted to add consoles but not much luck. thanks
