Associating Layouts with Gamelists in Mala

I've been fumbling around with this one, but I can't seem to figure it out.  I created gamelists and layouts, all located in the C:\..\Mala174\ directory, and named in pairs, e.g.:

mame_fighters.mll & mame_fighters.mlg

And in the Mala Options -> Layout -> GUI tab, I clicked the checkbox for the "Gamelist" option.  With this, all of my gamelists are just showing the standard background graphic and a centered list of games (neither of which match my layouts).  Do I need to use the layout folder structure?  Am I missing a step?

My mlg files (ex. beatemups.mlg, not mame_beatemups.mlg) are in the same folder as Mala.exe

My mll files (ex. mame_beatemups.mlg) are in the layouts folder

My background pictures are in a folder with the same name as the layout example: mame_beatemups
Those folders are located in the layouts folder.
