SSFIV - Steam needed?
« on: December 23, 2013, 09:34:59 am »
Hi gang,

I have a copy of SSFIV Arcade Edition bought through Steam that I want to have in my cabinet. However, ideally I don't want to have to run Steam to play it. Is this possible without using a crack/path/warez/haxorzzz or is my easiest bet just to keep Steam in offline mode (and will that significantly slow down my computer boot up speed?).

(For the record, I have another PC I use Steam on a fair bit for PC gaming so I ideally don't want to have the cabinet have to log in every time I want to play a game in case I want Steam running on my main PC for whatever reason.)

Sorry if this has been covered already, I couldn't find any information after a search.

keep steam in offline mode. Only other way to do it I know of is use a crack , and you said no cracks.
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

Ha, well I didn't say "no cracks", was just wondering if there's another way of doing it without having to resort to cracks, 'cos cracks are cracks and cracks is wack etc.

But if the majority of people here use cracks for this then I would be more open to that - just curious really as to the best way of doing it.

For ShoRyuKade, I used a crack. I bought the game and I only play it on that PC, so Its cracked in the spirit of not pirating the game. I dont know the legal context of it, but Im ok in the moral context.

Yeah I don't have ay moral issues with using a crack because I've bought the thing after all. It just always feels a bit... messy having to use one. I'm solvent enough now that I can actually buy my games legitimately; I shouldn't have to use that stuff! Darned DRM...

If you use the crack, don't you lose the online stuff?  (which may or may not be important to you)

If you can play SSIV - Steam is NOT going to slow your computer down.  I don't know where this idea keeps coming from.   :banghead:

I guess let go of the Pentium 4 PCs and upgrade maybe?  lol

Not fussed about online.

Well steam is running on computer resources after all. Whether or not it take a big or a small chunk out of l the overall speed, it will inevitably add an extra delay somewhere. It's a question of how much that delay is and what I can live with. If it's unnoticeable then great. But if I have to wait a minute for it to load at the same time as my front end before I can play SSF4 then that will suck.

What are the spec's of the PC you plan on running this game on?

It's an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ (2.8GHz) with an Asus M2V DUAL DDR II motherboard and a 512MB Geforce 8800GT PCI Express. Can't remember exactly how much RAM but at least 2GB.

I'm sure it's fast enough to boot Steam up fairly promptly but my point is I ideally want as short a time as possible between when I press my power button and when I can play any game I want on the equipment I have.

Ok, in my opinion - you're in the "you need to buy a new pc" territory.  :)

Why? SSF4 plays absolutely fine and I'm not planning any 3D arcade games. Seems fine.

For anyone like me who has given in and just let their cab connect, here is the batch file I'm using to sign into steam when the pc starts up:
Code: [Select]
START Steam.exe -login username password -silent(substitute your steam username and password)
I have that in the steam folder and a shortcut to it in the startup folder.

No issues so far, but just did it yesterday and steam hasn't tried any updates yet.
Due to an issue with my audio card software stealing focus, my front end (Mala) startup is delayed by placing a shortcut in the startup folder instead of choosing the option to have it launch with windows, so that could be another factor.
So far, so good.

If you go to the game's folder in program files, steam, apps, common (not sure which order those folders will appear) you can launch the game directly and bypass stream completely.

In my experience, Steam must be running in the background for that to work.
Not sure if SSFIV is different.  I'm stuck with the games for windows live version that I bought from Capcom.

Yeah now that you mention it, SF X Tekken did need stream running, but SSFIVAE works without it. I have it running on my system like that with no problems. In fact those are the only two stream games I've tried.
