MAME ROMS gone wonky? (A Tapper Tragedy)
« on: December 18, 2013, 09:14:34 am »
Do ROMS ever go haywire? I'm using .148. Tapper previously worked. I play tested and configured it. Now that I have my cabinet up and running, I can't get it to load either in Mala or directly from MAME. Any ideas what may have happened? I haven't changed any configurations in MAME.

Are you using the same revision of MAME and the same roms as when it was working before?

Is MAME giving you the message that files are missing, or is it just not working?

Does the folder it is in contain ALL the roms that were present when tapper was working before?

EDIT: - 0.145u7: Moved Sound Board prom 5784 to midssio device set.
So you need to have the midssio.zip rom present if using a version of mame newer than v.145

^This - it uses the midway SSIO soundboard so you need to make sure you have the midssio.zip file in your rom folder. I just recently went through the same thing !

It's the same configuration as what worked before. MAME is telling me files are missing, so I'll check for that sound board file. Thanks!

As a follow up, how many games could that be affecting? I wonder if there are other dysfunctional roms I gave up on that could be revived.

These roms use the same source driver as Tapper, so could possibly be affected by the missing midssio

Thanks for the list. I have a few of those on my cab so I'll test them again.

Adding midssio.zip did the trick.  Thanks for the help!

this list is rather outdated.

the problem here wasn't a missing bios, but instead a missing DEVICE rom "midssio"

These are like bios roms, but aren't, they typically represent common internal roms of devices, or standard boards used by manufacturers.  As a result your list here didn't even cover the "midssio" case that was actually the issue here.

Would probably help to list all those as well, because as far as an end user is concerned they may as well be additional bios roms, and they're only likely to increase in numbers as common chips get decapped, or ROM data is better organized and moved to the correct places, eg. the ym2608 change I made ;-)

(yeah, I know it's a bit of a pain, but it's part of MAME growing up and becoming more organized / logical from a hardware point of view)
