Windows 8.1
« on: November 26, 2013, 11:20:20 pm »
Should I install 8.1 over my existing Windows 8 build, or will it just crap it up like the beta did?

Did anyone experience any improvement?

8.1 is a huge improvement over 8.  I used the Windows Store to update my living room PC - no issues at all with the update.

I updated about a half dozen machines from the Windows store and had no issues.

I take that back.  I did have to reinstall a few apps - but Windows straight told me "you need to reinstall this"

AutoDesk TruView was one.  VMWare Workstation 10 was another.

I've gone from native Windows 7 -> 8 -> 8.1 on one machine via upgrades.

Only issue I had was with quirky drivers that needed to be massaged when I went to 8 and removed entirely when I went to 8.1  Believe it was some Conexant audio driver?  The issue had a solution once the respective OSes had been in the wild a couple of weeks.

I liked 8 fine but I entirely skipped 7.  I've recently gotten another machine with 7 on it and I understand a lot of the bitching.

Thanks for the feedback.

I backed up my data first (got ripped off at Frys) on a WD 1TB drive and then ran 8.1 from Microsoft.  It took forever to download/install but nearly everything worked except the AMD drivers.

I wanted to upgrade it to 8.1 as I am using it for my home lab.  I am running Windows 2012 on a bare metal ESXi using vSphere with additional file-linked 2012 servers (3 of them) to get my VMWare certification, but I can also manage my CounterStrike Server too so it is still gaming related.  ;D

It all works a treat.

Thanks again!
