What games will you be remembering fondly in the future?

It's a strange hobby, this arcade business. Practically all the games were difficult, bad graphics, and expensive to play. But I think that is aprt of the charm - easy to play, hard to master. And the battle for the high scores were legendary. Not to mention built out of unobtainium - they weren't games you could really "own", except for a crummy port to a home console.

The games I will remember on arcade vastly outnumber the home console games I think about from time to time. Console games are very much "in the moment" and when you are done with them, they seem to go away. Here's a few non-arcade games that I hold dear:

 Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PS2) is the only game in my collection I have multiple copies of and is also my mothers favorite.

Duke Nukem 3D (PC)  the amount of time spent on this game was only eclipsed by Carmageddon and Half-Life.

It's not really a valid question is it?  The games you remember fondly are ones you already remember fondly because they are old... or else you wouldn't remember them fondly.  The ones that are newish, well unless you can tell the future, you don't know yet.  For that matter you can't really tell if a game you like now will be one you continue to like in the future, because again, no crystal ball.

I haven't had to pull out my "idiot police" badge in quite some time, but... well.....

You don't remember things in a good light because they are old, but because they are good and original. If it was just about age, well then we'd all be building Pong cabinets.

At the time when I was playing through Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, for the hundredth time, I was thinking "this is the best game ever!" which is something that didn't happen with any single 360/PS3 game in my experience. I had a lot of fun on them, but there was nothing that really did anything new. The majority of them tried to combine several types of game into one with less than stellar results, and many times I just kept playing after the thrill was gone for the sake of completion.

You "the PS3/360 wasn't really all that good" guys are hilarious.   

I mean, I get it.  Those $15 TV joysticks started the funeral, and the $5 XBL/PSN legal game downloads were the final coffin nail in the MAME cabinet hobby.  (Hell, even the emulators play and look better on the 360/PS3 than any comparably priced PC)

All the built in media playback functionality meant we weren't having to mod everyone's Xbox anymore.  Native HD support.  Games more immersive and polished than ever before to the point it makes playing old generation console games almost painful.


PC gaming would be dead if the consoles hadn't more or less unified the port process this generation, now it's firmly back in the hands of the middle aged neckbeards just like your glory days in the 80s.  Rejoice!

 

Anyway, more seriously, I've give the nod to these recent games off the top of my head:

Mass Effect 2
Red Dead Redemption
Uncharted 2
Portal 1 (though 2 did eventually grow on me)
Far Cry 3

Stuff I thought extremely overrated:

Bioshock - all of them.  Yes, we get it, you've got a boner for Atlas Shrugged.  Meh.
Dishonored - critics couldn't make this one happen no matter how hard they tried.  Think it was, what, $15 6 weeks after release?
Deus Ex: Human Revolution - booooooring

Yeah, that's about what I did the first play through. I hammered away on it during a snowstorm. It's especially diabolical if you get caught in the looping levels.After that my poor hands couldn't stand the thought of another grueling run like that.

My teenage children still play Pokemon (not the card game).  A lot of their friends do as well.  I'm surprised that it has held up for 10+ years but who am I to talk? I keep thinking that when these kids get older someone is going to make a PG-13 live action Pokemon movie that will kill at the box office.

I checked out Dragon's Crown. Wow! Besides being really R-rated fap material... it looks like a pretty good game and right up my alley. I'd totally play it... if I didn't have young kids in the house lol!

Wow...  Racing Destruction Set and Paradroid...  There's a blast from the past.  My best friend and I used to play Racing Destruction Set and make all these outrageous tracks in low/high gravity just to watch our vehicles float off or pancake...  Loved that game... 

Rainbow Six Three (PC) was also a lot of fun, I think I played that one and R6 Vegas 2 (also PC) the most out of the series.

I do remember several C64 game that I loved:

Out of all the computers I've owned, I think I get the most nostalgic for the C64...  I loved the Amiga also, but the C64 games we just awesome... 

Other games that I have some very fond memories of are because of the ties to friends and my kids...  Some of the best times I had gaming was with them...
