Pending Ms Pac Man project
« on: October 18, 2013, 10:26:41 am »
Goals:
An arcade machine based on a PCB, not MAME

Parts on Hand:

I have an aftermarket(?) JAMMA Ms Pacman board I bought from ebay.  Described as "MS. PAC MAN BOARD-JAMMA-NO SPEED UP"  The board has a note that says swap the green and blue wires.

CGA to VGA converter board

LCD Monitor

In transit:
Arcade power supply.

Things I intend to get.
JAMMA harness,
Buttons,
4 way joystick

I am not concerned about art at this time, as I haven't even decided if it will be an upright or cocktail, but I am leaning towards cocktail.

Am I missing anything? Thanks.

I like that bartop kit.

What I really wonder is if I need an isolation transformer or what. Ill take a picture when I can.

Thanks!

Isolation transformer is for arcade CRT monitors.  You shouldn't need one for your setup.

I built a Neo Geo into one of my MVS kits.  I used:

Neo Geo motherboard
Switching Power Supply
CGA to VGA board
Scanline Generator
LCD monitor
Speakers
JAMMA harness
Joystick / Buttons

If your mspacman board is JAMMA, its a bootleg and probably no better than a 60 in 1. A 60 in 1 would also alleviate the need for a signal converter, but it does run a hacked version of MAME.  Haruman also sells a pretty great Midway inspired cocktail cabinet if you dont want a bartop like the one pictured.

Why 4 buttons? a single coin and 2 start buttons would suffice, unless you go with the 60 in 1, then you need 3 action buttons (or just 2 if you dont play the one game that requires 3)

Well that is too bad.  I'm out $20ish then.

just a 4 way joystick.  I didn't count the buttons.
-not sure if that is directed at me or the bartop pictured.

my brain merged "Buttons,4 way joystick" into "4 buttons and a joystick", lol, my bad. but yeah, MsPac was not JAMMA

I disagree. The 60-in-1 is emulated, a bootleg might at it's worst run the game incorrectly (wrong timing/resolution), and at it's best run the game exactly as the original hardware. I would investigate the PCB before passing judgement though, as my knowledge of arcade games is from 1985 and onward. Maybe the bootlegs of older games were very easy to "get right"?

I disagree more, I have yet to see a MsPac bootleg that doesnt either have some messed up AI on the ghosts or new/wrong ordered mazes. The 60 in 1 version is not terrible, and I've literally played them side by side (a 60 in 1 in my Galaga cab that sits right next to a dedicated MsPacman).

Noooooooo not my intent. I was just explaining my opinion, I fully respect yours. There might be a bootleg out there that runs MsPac , perfect or at least as good/better than the 60 in 1 I just haven't come across one, thats all. He's already bought the board, no harm in trying it out

FWIW, if the bootleg sucks, youve already wired it for jamma and the 60 in 1s are jamma lol
