I'm trying to run the original Daytona USA Deluxe & Sega Rally PC games without having to insert the disc for audio.

A while back, I had the game Screamer running in DOSBox with audio working from a .bin & .cue mounted to a virtual drive.
I thought it would be a lot easier outside of DOSBox, but that hasn't been the case.

I'm using bin and cue again with the current version of Daemon Tools Lite.
The game doesn't bug me about the cd not being present, but it doesn't play the CD audio.
If I play the virtual disc as an audio CD in Windows Media Player, it plays fine.
My OS is Win7 64bit Home Premium if it matters.

Anybody have this type of thing working?

  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
Could try installing using D-fend reloaded ( http://dfendreloaded.sourceforge.net/ ) - It's a GUI for Dosbox that simplifies setting games up a bit - the install wizard has options to install from an iso and make the iso available during game play - so it might set things up properly for you. (IIRC Crusader no remorse and no regret on my system are both setup that way (and they are at least as old as the games you mention if not older, and the sound tracks work fine )

Thanks, but these are windows 95-98 games.

Guess I confused things a bit by mentioning that I had another game working in DOSbox.
(I will check that out though, as I never could get the steering wheel calibrated in Screamer)

I believe D-fend reloaded can also be used to install old windows games as well (It's been awhile since I installed anything using it but I believe it could be used to install older games that were not supported in 64 bit windows) From the d-fend reloaded Features page :

Usage of Windows-based games:
You can also manage and start your Windows-based games via the D-Fend Reloaded user interface. This allows you to manage all your games (old and new ones) in one place.

Also another thing to try :

Note: The game uses a simple CD check which only checks the first CD/DVD drive. It will only play the music if you mount or insert the CD image in the CD/DVD drive with the lowest drive letter. If you use a virtual CD/DVD drive (like Daemon Tools), you can change the drive letter in Disk Manager (Right click on My Computer, click Manage and then select Disk Management).

Seems the CD check for this game only checks the first CD\DVD drive letter assigned on the computer so you might try changing the virtual drive letter to the first installed CD DVD drive and see if that gets it working !

Yup, have the virtual drive as drive D.  With some old games, that's the only drive they check.  :lol
The games would give a message to insert the disc if they were looking in the wrong place for it.

Strange thing is that I just tried San Fransisco Rush the Rock Alcatraz and the audio tracks work fine for it.

The two that won't play cd audio are both Sega games from the same timeframe, so there must be something different about them.
I'll have to do some more searching and maybe try a few other image formats.

mdx format built into Daemon Tools works!

Took 10 minutes to get it working this morning.
I shouldn't stay up until 1am working on this stuff or posting.
It's not as productive as sleep.

LOL - was just coming here to tell you I got it working on my system also (was bugging me last night so decided to download and test a few things this AM.) -- though I went a different route and ripped the audio tracks to a library then created an audio disk image with NERO and mounting that image in Daemon tools lite then launching the game !!

Glad you got it working !!
