PS3 Deal, to good to be true?????
« on: September 28, 2013, 11:20:31 pm »
So on my local craigslist theres a person selling an older model ps3 80gb, like 7 different need for speed games, dirt 2 and 3, gran turismo 5, madden and nba 13...
AND a Logitech G27.
All for $300

Does this seem like a to good to be true deal?
It's been up for just over 2 weeks and he still has it....

And it's like a 2 hour drive one way.

Your opinions please?

"heck yea go for it". or "heck yea you'll prolly get shot for your $300"????????
And yea the g27 is the main thing I want, the reason I found the listing in the first place.

Is the place in a bad area? It sounds like an AMAZING deal, so agree to meet in a public place, take someone with you and make sure people know where you're going.

Not familiar with the town at all but from google maps, it seems like a smaller town and the crime stats seem better than my home towns...
Only thing about the public place is, I would want to test the ps3 and the wheel before buying, so I would kinda need to go to his house....

Just not sure...

Talk to the seller on the phone and get a feel for the guy.  Ask why he's selling, is he the original owner, etc.

If you still have apprehensions, pretend you never saw the ad.

Regarding testing it....perhaps you could request a video call via Skype or face time or something to see it working?

Give him an extra $25 to ship and pay shipping.  That will work out the same as 4 hours of driving and you probably won't get shot.

Eh, personally I only purchase hardware on Craigslist that's older and under $100 (and that's only for a console/game lot.) I feel like the newer consoles had higher failure rates and are very hit or miss when dealing with random strangers.

Remember, it's not like eBay where you have purchaser protection or feedback. If there's a problem with the console, it's very likely you'll never get this guy to return your calls. I mean it's probably okay but make sure you can afford taking that gamble.

When I bought something off craigslist,  I paid it via paypal first, then picked the items up that same day.

I don't know what kind of protections you have if you get there and it doesn't work so you leave without it, because then it's just your word versus theirs, but it's certainly better than showing up with $300 in your pocket.

Now to get the g27 running with mame.

Start with Model 2 Emulator.  Much easier setup and great games + working ffb.

See the MAME section of the Driving Cab info thread stickied in the Driving Cab Forum for some tips on setting up MAME.
It isn't like a joystick where you map it globally and all the games work.
Every friggin' game needs some kinda tweaking.  Mostly inverting pedals and increasing sensitivity.

Also, MAME hacks all the Hi/Lo shifters to be a single button toggle so it works like ass with a real shifter or paddles.
So you end up either having to use a custom build based on older roms or changing and compiling the new version yourself.
Again, see the driving cab info thread.

Yep, people get shot here.  But not nearly as often as the media makes you think.  You are more likely to slip and die in the shower.

Something tells me if I look up deaths due to firearms versus deaths due to shower slipping, I'm pretty sure I know what's going to be higher.

Not likely.  The problem you'd run into is that the "Deaths by Firearm" stats include suicides.  Which makes zero sense.

Here's a nice little chart from the CDC.  While I exaggerated a bit with the "Slipping in the shower" part, fact is you are more actually more likely to die in a car crash or by POISONING than a gun.

Well officer, he was cleaning his gun in the shower, slipped, and shot himself.  Official cause of death?  Lead poisoning!  :laugh2:

awwww damnit... are we are going to do this lopsided comparison. AGAIN?! Remember what happened when we compared gun crime vs car accidents?

surely this is all in jest.

Seems like "gun deaths" isn't the right comparison.  Unless slipping in the shower is an act of aggression towards someone else you'd have to split "gun accidents" out and compare to that.
