Dumping out high scores for export?

I have a requirement to dump out mame high scores to a file from which I can read and import to where I would like the data to be.

I was hoping to use the hiscore.dat file but support for that has been withdrawn because of the issues it apparently started to cause with games, so I was wanting to avoid it.

With all that said the export is still a must requirement for me! Should I just run the 0.106 build of mame? Perhaps do a custom build of mame? If I did do a custom build of mame what are the effects of running the high score dat files?

Probably a dumb question but does the hiscore.dat hi file maintain scores for a running ROM or is it refreshed when the game is exited?
