WG U3100 Video Modes I think figured out...
« on: November 17, 2003, 12:02:34 pm »
Hi everyone,

First I want to say thanks for all the advice on my monitor choice.  I'm planning on building a vertical cab (for classic games) and went with a WG U3100.  I received the monitor am very pleased with how mame looks on it at 640x480x16x60hz.

I noticed some other people posting about resolution issues on this monitor and after playing with it, I have a theory as to why.  The WG specs say the horz freq must be 31.5 or 35.5.  They go on to list that it supports 640x200, 640x350, 640x480, 800x600, and 1024x768 interlaced.  What they don't indicate is the refresh rates for these particular modes.  I did some searching (http://www.awiz.com/syncrate.htm) and dug up a frequency chart that indicates that:

800x600 @ 35.5khz horz freq = 56hz refresh
1024x768 @ 35.5khz horz freq = 43hz refresh

For me this is not an issue as I plan to run all my games in mame at 640x480x60hz with the -effect sharp.  But, for others trying and trying to get the video modes 800x600 or 1024x768 to work, you should try the correct refresh of 56hz or 43hz int to see if that does the trick.  Now how well (or not!) games will play at 56hz or 43hz is another issue!
