Report on Groovymame with montor = lcd setting
« on: August 21, 2013, 02:01:11 am »
I've confirmed that Samsung 245BW monitors run games at any refresh rate you can think of with Groovymame + Powerstrip. It's pretty fantastic.

Pacman (60.60), Rtype (55), MK (54), Neogeo (59) etc. all ran perfectly with no tearing/hitching.

Combine this with HLSL, and you have a legitimate alternative to a CRT. This is amazing.

THANK YOU Calamity for making such an awesome MAME variant. This really blows open the doors for what's possible in an arcade setup.

Nice finding!  I think we should start creating a list of arcade friendly lcd monitors.
Important note: posts reporting GM issues without a log will be IGNORED.
Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

I've been enjoying Groovymame on my crappy old Samsung syncmaster 920n with power strip. I can only manage an 'lcd_range' of 57.51-61 though.

I'm intrigued about the 'frame_delay' option and the tearing you warned LCD users about. On my monitor it only starts half way up the screen, causing jerky horizontal scrolling, and the sprites and platforms to jump up and down vertically. It doesn't look like any v-sync tearing I've seen in the past.

I find all the lag reduction talk really interesting and would love to be involved with my trusty LCD!  :P

Thanks for reporting Barnard. So we have two Samsung models by now.

Quite true. I call it static tearing, I believe it has to do with GPU parallelization. I think it should be possible to remove it in the future, but only with some non-trivial modifications on the D3D code.
