Some people run 6, some run 7. If you run 7, you can use the bottom 4 for neo geo.

Neo geo used 4 buttons and people will do the "street fighter six" and add a 7th button to the bottom left of the bottom row, which makes a convincing NeoGeo layout. Also makes a good run button for the MKs that used it.

I'm not quite sure I understand your question but if you're gonna play fighters like the street fighter series, you're gonna need 6 buttons for the full effect though I guess you can use 4 and only have medium and hard punch and kick but that would affect some special moves.
I can only fit 4 buttons per player on my cab so I just resolve to playing neo geo fighters.
If you don't know what neo geo is, I'd suggest some googling. Check out www.hardmvs.com

I started my bartop as a 4 button neo geo type layout.
I then added 3 more buttons about a year later to play some capcom fighters.
I was going to eliminate the top right button altogether, but I like using it for neo geo games, so it stayed.
The bottom left button and the top right are wired together, so they both act as "button 4" depending on what I'm playing.

If I had only 4 buttons and wanted to play Street Fighter, I would have them set up as weak and medium punch and kick, and when you press both weak and medium punch (or kick) simultaneously you get hard punch or kick. I've never tried it but I think that would be fairly intuitive.

might work for the regular SFs, but would make playing some of the VS games a nightmare or at least harder.

Yeah that makes better sense probably.

To play SF2 properly you need all 6 buttons.
1. The light punch cancels dash attacks (Ken vs Blanka)
2. The medium dragon punch goes through fireballs (Ken vs Ryu)

These are just two examples but the point is that light and medium attacks are not interchangeable and both are needed in different situations with various players.

BUT if I was limited to just four buttons it would be the lights and hards that stay.
