Great mods! Why is the gameplay so slow in the videos?

Your welcome.  I"ll probably keep working on MK for the rest of the month, or until I run out of steam, whichever comes first.

I've got a few goals in mind and atm about half of them are met.  For whatever reason, NRS decided to give some of the ninjas a mk2 dlc costume, some a mk1 and some a mk3, even though they could have given every ninja all three. I at the very least want to figure out how to inject new move sets so we can get all the ninja's their proper costumes.

I also want to finish up the bosses.  We can already hack up an existing ending and Kintaro and Goro already have ending text, so it would just be a matter of doing some poses in xnalara to make some art for endings.  There is some scripting preventing the bosses/classics from doing fatalities on each other and from other players finishing them we need to remove that as well.

Also I need to add in the rest of the NPCs.  Granted most of them are lame, but maybe if we can get move sets swapped in the future, it will be possible to make them into something cool.

You're the pro Howard.

I don't know if it's worth mentioning and how deep you can get into the program BUT... is it POSSIBLE to make this thing work in a 640x480 resolution on xp64 or win7 by any chance?
I want this game on my MK machine so badly...

Love your mods, thank you very much for doing this.

Yes it is entirely possible, at least the 640x480 part.  The main thing preventing the game from running at lower resolutions are the movie files believe it or not.  They are encoded via bink video at 720p.  Bink doesn't scale all that well.  Other than that, there are various ini files in the game that allow you to tweak the resolution of certain things, including the video player.  So while I can't say for certain that it will run at 640x480, yes it's possible in theory.

That being said.... the gameplay area is going to be 16:9.... there's nothing that can be done about that.  So on a 480p monitor the game is going to look really really bad.  Maybe even unplayable bad.

I really like this game.  It's motivated me to get back to work on the widescreen slim cab.

One thing that is annoying the crap out of me though is that in training, it shows the default xbox buttons for the moves even though I've remapped them.
I have A&B on the top row instead of the bottom like an xbox controller, so it's confusing.
Maybe they'll release a patch that will correct this, but it would be really cool if I could use the letters I have on my CP instead of LB, RT, etc.

Is there an easy way for a dumb end-user to swap out the button images?

It's fairly easy.

You need gildor's tools and one of the various dds injectors.  Run the package that contains the button images (sorry don't know which one) through extract.exe to get the unmolested files,  then run the package through umodel with the -export -dds command to get the useable images.  Edit them in the photoshop and inject the resulting dds files back.

Well then you didn't copy everything correctly.  It's as simple as that.  ;)

The mod needs to be extracted to the DisccontentPC folder, where your exe is.  It needs to be extracted so that it OVERWRITES your asset, config, ect folders.  If it doesn't do that then you did it wrong.

I dont want to poop on what you did...  but I have an Honest question...

Do you Really like this game?

I mean, I played the version on the xbox360, and it felt broken, slow, bad animations, and annoying in-game cutscenes.
No more fast intense action combat, and smooth flowing gameplay.

After several hours trying to like it, I simply could not.

I appreciate the support, but I'm a little too far down the rabbit hole to quit at this point even if I wanted to.  ;)

A Necropolis for the bosses, actual ENDINGS for Goro (finished) and Kintaro (just started)  all the dlc characters and some better vs pics are all on the way.  As well as an updated wrapper that does... things..... ;D

I've actually built a dlc manager program for the game, but for the boss mod it's just pointless.... it changes too much.

Why oh why do I feed the troll?

The game is far from broken, its actually quite amazingly balanced. "Bad" animation and what YOU consider "real" animations are not one in the same. If by ingame cutscenes you mean the QTEs, well I sort of agree with you there, it'd be nice to be able to disable them. The fighting is pretty fast paced when compared to other MKs and is quite smooth. It is one of those "if you dont like it, dont do it" scenarios. MK isnt for everyone and I still like MKII the best, but that doesnt mean MK9 isnt pretty great. MK9 sold over 3 million console copies, and sold well enough on PC that NetherRealms is considering porting Injustice.
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

I cant remember which video game site it was, but it was in an interview with Boon about the fact PC numbers were much better than expected on the port of MK9.

Apparently it was a tweet from Ed Boon.  However, there was also this obscure amazon posting that sent some waves around the web but it might just be an error.

I cant remember which video game site it was, but it was in an interview with Boon about the fact PC numbers were much better than expected on the port of MK9.

Considering the "publicity" this port got it's a damn near miracle that it sold a single copy on the pc.  I'm the biggest MK fan outside of you on this forum and I didn't know about the release until it was right on top of us.  That is a testament to just how popular the game is.

Mr. Boon unfortunately has also been quite harsh on the modding community.  They haven't done anything to remove our mods, but I believe there was a tweet from him explaining how unlocking the bosses and ect effected the balance of the game.  To which I say "duh!"  It's not like the bosses in MKT were taken seriously either.  It's just fun to be able to play with them.

Also I know I shouldn't... but.... since you started... If you want to see "realism" in your fighting games perhaps you shouldn't pick one that features a human/demon mutant hybrid, a thunder god, an undead Spector, a shape shifting sorcerer and a Wraith.  The fun about MK, from the fighting, to the characters to the storyline is how UNreal everything is.

I thought this thread was due for an update.  I'm knee deep in it at this point.  We are discovering new things daily and I recently figured out how to cleanly modify the DLC and Boss characters so that we can make alt costumes for them.  There are several other findings in this area we are working on as well.

I've already released a non-homosexual variant of Rain (not that there's anything wrong with that) as a proof of concept, and a few other people are working on some very professional-looking skins for the others.

More tricks to add to the wrapper as well.  ;)

Howard your work is AMAZING and I thank you for all the effort you put forward.
I enjoy this game (as I do most fighters) and despite the fact that I stink at it.
Your work has made me want to pick up a new *(used) PC for a cabinet just to play this (and Injustice).
Keep it up and again many thanks.

Off to find a KVM switch and PC so I can run both PC's in my cabinet..................................

Yes, that's why you don't see me around much anymore... I'm still working on MKKE.  A few of the guys tested my tools the other day on Injustice and they all work, so there's that as well. Perhaps we can make MK vs DC 2:  Non-Sucking Edition? ;)

Recent things I've figured out is how to manipulate colors and materials of the characters as well as figuring out MK's oddball normal map format, allowing for transparency and other effects, how to add costume-specific vs images and most recently how to add additional files to the XXX archives.  UBM 3.0, which will probably be renamed Ultimate Mortal Kombat, should be out before Christmas time with tons of surprises.

Oh here is an example of my most recent hacking efforts... note that regular Jade's images are used for the primary costume and new images are used for the NPC_ClassicJade costume, which as been altered to be an alternate costume of Jade:

Impressive.  Thanks for sharing that update.
The "MK vs. DC 2" idea is very intriguing.  Was the first one bad?  I've never played it.

Do you think there is a way I can have two working copies of the game, one modded and the other not?
I currently have a standard purchased Steam installation.

As an aside, from your video it looks like you too have the slowdown issue that hampers the game in my machine.  I was never able to solve it, other than using the modded frame-skipping config files floating around on the web.  The lack of optimization in this port leaves a lot to be desired.

Edit:  Er, never mind.  You already mentioned that capturing the video causes the slowdown.

I would say it would be good if you considered it a prequel to Injustice, horrible if you considered it a MK game.

Tetzrep, the Elder God of MK hacking, outlined the header differences between the two games several months ago (I didn't know this when I posted) although it would be a considerable amount of work, it IS theoretically possible to convert an Injustice character to a MK character.
Although  it still might not work because when he did this research we didn't know how to rename characters and clone them.

It should be possible to have multiple copies of the game if you understand that they'll have to share the same game save file.  You'll have to ahem "acquire" a copy of the non-steam version though.  Actually I think the non-steam version keeps the game save in another location, so that might work as well.

This looks fantastic!  I just snagged this off the steam sale. I'd love to check out your current build if it's available. ;)
