HLSL - can't get it to run?
« on: August 07, 2013, 11:19:25 pm »
I've been trying to get the new HLSL effects running in mame but for some reason I cannot get anything to happen?  I have downloaded a full mame 0.148 set.  I first tried with Groovymame but nothing happens (ie I see no effect when launching donkeykong via command line).  I have since downloaded the official mame 0148 but still nothing happens.  I have the hlsl folder with the files in it.  I have created the mame.ini file and set hlsl to 1.  I tried with both onboard intel graphics and have now added a Nvidia Geforce GT220.  I have installed directx9c runtime and rebooted.

I'm running windows xp pro 32bit with a 19" LCD monitor.  I'd just like to get the scanlines effect and maybe curve the edge of the screen slightly so it appears like a CRT.

Any help would be appreciated.

Might want to look into your video card. It has to support shaders 3.0
Some onboard graphic chips support it, but some don't.

I have a similar problem, my test computer displays the effects but the unit going in the cabinet won't display to save my life.

I couldn't get it to work with 148 either, not sure if it was my setup or 148 that was broken. HLSL works fine on 149, the problem with this version is you can't have dual display and HLSL enabled at the same time.

I had the same problem with 146. After I downloaded and installed DirectX 9 everything worked fine.

If you can get the scanlines, should you also be able to mimic the curvature?
I've followed instructions, have the scan lines, but cannot get the curvature effects to work.

Ok I got it to work now.  I had to install the full directx and not just directx 9c which I had done before.  I have also changed the graphics card to a 9500GT.  So now HLSL is working, however it makes the games run too slow on my system.  With HLSL enabled the games drop to 76% speed.  Would this be graphics card related?  I am running Windows xp, 2GB RAM, C2D 2.8ghz, Geforce 9500GT.

Binkles - As for curvature, the curvature seems to work ok on my system (apart from the slowdown).  I have only used the one set of HLSL settings so far though which I got from here:  http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=45026&start=240

I used the HLSL '91 Japan mode.
