A topic in Consoles had me thinking... what are your credentials as gamers? What are your crowning achievements? Now is your chance to brag!

I'm in Howard's boat... I've been gaming since the late 70's,  there is no way I could come up with a complete list.   I probably forgot more games than I remember.

I figure I've forgotten more achievements I've made compared to most people's list.  Not that it has anything to do with skill, but the sheer amount of games I've went through is staggering.

This.  I might have beaten 200 games for the NES alone.  For most of the history of video games beating a game wasn't something you logged.  It was something you told your friends about at school before you traded the cartridge to them for one they beat last week.  And that point was only after games came along that actually could be finished.  It doesn't count the hours and hours and hours spent on stuff like the 2600 trying to qualify for Activision patches and working through the Swordquest comics.

I guess if we just stick to recently... I competed in the last two ACAM tournaments... have competed in quite a lot of high level pinball tournaments...

Maybe my biggest accomplishment recently is getting my sons begging for entry into (and then showing decently at) the same ACAM tournaments.  Loading up my vehicle with my sons' friends and bringing them to a real arcade for the afternoon.  Seeing my son go from the pins in our basement and grow into a respected regional competitor.  I'm at the age now where it's not really for me to grow and accomplish things myself.  I'm handing the arcade lifestyle down to my sons and exposing their friends to it as well.

My only current credential is that I won the Intellivision "Snaffu" tournament at Digital Press in NJ last month. Other than that, my credentials are fairly week. I don't have the follow through I used to have when I was younger. So many unfinished games in my pile...

Can't imagine a better way to spend my day other than reading about what games everyone else has completed.  Or not completed.

Chrono Trigger has to have claimed, at least, 4 or 5 months of my life over the years.

Try playing Xenoblade Chronicles on Wii.  Being a completionist can take you 4-5 months for one playthrough.

And it's such an awesome game, it's in my top 5 of all time.

Damn, 20 replies and only a handful of relevant ones. I'm more curious about grueling accomplishments you guys are proud of, like some of the tournaments, or even kill screens. I'm not expecting a comprehensive list of every game you've ever seen the title screen of... Oh well! Better luck next time!

Ah, if you want grueling, then definitely tournaments are the thing.  40 hours over four days at the ACAM tourney is an accomplishment in itself.  Been in a few coindrop pinball tourneys like that too.

Commodore 64 computer -   The Last V8

 Beat it when I was a kid.  Insanely difficult.. and the game terrorizes you psychologically.

Commodore Amiga -   Battle Squadron

 Another very difficult game to defeat.. especially with only one player.

PC -  Platypus

Sega Genesis - Thunderforce II

 A year of off and on play, before being able to beat this shooter.   One of the bosses on the Gen version was actually more difficult than the x68000 version... which one day, I will also try to beat...

Sega Genesis - Hellfire

 Its been a very long time since Id played this.. but I recall it being a real wench of a game.

PS1 -  Ridge Racer

 Beat the game in both forwards and reverse, defeating car 13...  and then being able to Drive car 13!   =)

PS1 -  Loxmax

 Looks like a childrens game... but quickly becomes frustratingly difficult.   Incredibly beautiful graphics.  Great use of scaling.


 I know theres more really crazy stuff Ive made it thru .. I just cant recall at the moment.

This may sound weird coming from someone who has played games since the Atari 2600 and Apple IIe days... but I've never understood the whole completionist / achievement thing.  It used to be you'd play games to either get a high score (for games with no end) or to complete the game.

I know some games reward ingame achievements with extra content or different endings; and that I can understand.  I can also understand competing directly with other people.  But achievements these days or going for "100% completion" seems pointless to me.

Can anyone explain what the point is?

I'm not big on "time-trial"esque 'cheevos/trophies, but I sure do love the 100% items found type goals. Maybe I think it's because it's neat seeing what all potential abilities or whatever the devs have hidden away in games? I'm not sure, exactly. My binge gaming tends to learn towards grinding away at collecting things lately, rather than optimum routes and repeat events. I think that's just my quirks personally, though.

I find that a lot of the more modern games where you can achieve 100% completion makes it decidedly "not fun" as you're doing tedious things to get that completion. But I suppose some people do get a thrill out of it so I won't take that away from them.

Modern games have a ton of badges that basically mean "I spent 26 hours of my life collecting squid poop in a virtual world".  They have nothing to do with skill and everything to do with spare time.

quantity over quality these days. back in the day games had lot more going on with ACTUAL reply value.

Atari 5200, when I was 5 – 9. Other than the bad controllers it got a bad rap; it was the first to have all the classic arcade games on it, the graphics were not quite as good as it’s arcade counter parts but the game play was all there.

Parents would not give me a NES, could only play at friends’ houses sometimes.

For Christmas they bought me my first computer game “Return to Zork” Never gave 2 shits about any console after that, computers and computer games better all day everyday in every way. Better controllers, clearer graphics, better menu and inventory systems and always coming out with new genres of games that consoles could not even attempt to do.

Painting with too broad of a brush there. If you skipped everything after Genesis you missed some downright amazing games. Even after all this time Castlevania Symphony of the Night and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past are my 2 favorite games. Even bought a 3DS just so I can get the LttP sequel.

Not every PC game had better controls, graphics, menus, or inventory systems either. For every gem like Fallout you had dozens of ---smurfy--- games. Same goes for consoles though, instead of comparing apples to oranges I prefer to have both,
