Best MAME?
« on: June 24, 2013, 12:36:03 pm »
I'm looking to get the smoothest experience out of my MAME machine as possible, though I'm unsure which version to use. I was told that I should be using .105 and below, though it wouldn't hurt to get some more input. So, taking my machine's specs into consideration, what would be a good version to use?
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 1300 MHz
RAM: 512 MB
GPU: 512 MB NVIDIA GeForce 6800
Sound: SB Live! Wave Device

That old, you'll basically have to stick with the older roms, but otherwise, just about any version of mame will do

I'm using a slightly patched 129u. Runs all the classics, just fine.

It's actually v.106 or older.  A more demanding video engine was added in v.107.
v.106 roms can be found for this reason.  It would be a good place to start.
It really depends on what games you intend to play.
If you only plan to play the early to mid 80's classics, you'll be fine.

I'm unsure if 1.3Ghz is enough to run the 90's 2D fighters.
I definitely wouldn't use anything newer than v.106

Thanks for the help! I used to use v.106 in an older setup and that did the job just fine. What I'm really looking for is the best version for Incredible Technologies games (Golden Tee, World Class Bowling, etc.), and I'll definitely give the older versions a go. As for the 2D fighters, I've ran Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat/MK2, Fatal Fury, Samurai Shodown, and KOF with great success.

thought the slowest P4 was 1.4Ghz, the Willamette core ones. I think maybe you should find out the best processor for your board and upgrade to that.

Edit: whoops, the launch speed was 1.4, but they did in fact bring out a slower chip later.  Yours is definitely a Willamette core CPU, but you should be able to get a P4 2.0 which is a huge help.

If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

If 1.06 is an issue, go to .96. A sound rewrite was made soon thereafter so its what I have on a P4 1.8.  All the IGT games are in then and work fine.
