  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
So,

I want the advantages of GM for scrolling etc. while using HLSL on a LCD screen (it's for a bartop - no space for a crt this time). What's the way to setup GM for this? I have great HLSL settings,
I just need the GM basics for this.

Thanks in advance

All you have to do is set the HLSL as usual, then:

monitor lcd
syncrefresh 1

Forcing -syncrefresh here makes all games run at 60 Hz (assuming a typical 60 Hz LCD). If you don't want this, i.e. keep games running at their native refresh if it's not close enough to 60 Hz, then leave -syncrefresh alone (default = 0), this will toggle either -syncrefresh or -triplebuffer depending on how close the native refresh is from 60 Hz. The threshold is controlled by the -syncrefresh_tolerance option (default = 0.2 Hz). Obviously, if you don't force -syncrefresh, you can expect scroll hiccups in games that don't run at 60 Hz, although you'll have no tearing.

The "monitor lcd" option also imposes that MAME will run everything at your current desktop resolution, which ideally equals your LCD's native resolution when you're using an LCD. I'm telling this because, quite often, users have to force MAME to pick a lower resolution than the native one in order to get HLSL run at full speed. If this is the case, then the "monitor lcd" is a bit of a problem, because it expects not to switch resolutions. What you have to do in this case is to lower the desktop resolution instead to the desired one for HLSL to work.

I get pretty bad vertical and horizontal tearing with syncrefresh on or off - no matter. I'm testing this in Viewpoint which is 320x224 @ 59.19. My native resolution is 190x1080 @ 60.

It's not nearly as bad without HLSL, but still there. Any way to get this setup work without tearing?

Make sure you're using 'video d3d' for your LCD. I'm testing Viewpoint here with GM 0.149 and it works perfectly smooth/no tearing.

Using the standard HLSL settings didn't make a difference.  I'm using a different PNG now and a different post.fx. Changing those back to normal didn't change anything. Also, I couldn't make a screenshot of the tearing. It simply isn't in the screenshot?

May you post a log, I'm curious of what's going on there. What video card are you using?
Important note: posts reporting GM issues without a log will be IGNORED.
Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

Ok I think this issue is related to the one I explained here: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,128879.msg1367170.html#msg1367170

It's not really tearing, it's just a glitch due to scaling. However I can't make it disappear here by forcing lower -prescale values. It just stays whatever I do. This is when testing with an Intel card. Before I was testing with an ATI HD 6450 and it was flawless.

Interestingly this didn't happen in the previous intermediate version 0.148u5, so it must be something that has been modified in the middle.

Same problem with 0.148 u5. Maybe it's related to the graphic driver? Attached a log of viewpoint.

Have you tried forcing -prescale to different values (1, 2, 3, etc.)? Do this from command line, not from the ini.
