Demul Help
« on: June 23, 2013, 01:29:56 am »
Hello everyone (Again...)
Not that I hate you, but that I hate getting errors.
After getting advice on running crazy taxi, I installed Demul like people said. (thank you)
It works fine on my desktop pc,
but when I use it on my arcade pc, lower stats, but works fine with all mame games, n64, etc.
I get messed up textures, almost as if it was crazy taxi from hell.
I have directx9, the c++ redistrib files,
Any help here?
I am currently using the legacy plugin included, as the gpuDXv3 crashes on me when I load the game.

Thanks once again
-Ice

Demul is the most finicky of arcade emulators. You have to play with the video filters/checkboxs to get the graphics to look right. Each game is different. Using the correct Bios is also helpful. Check that your video resolution settings match Demul on your arcade PC. Demul needs to be set for different resulutions on each PC. That sounds like the most likely culprit in your situation.

Also keep in mind that using Auto Hot Key program and Batch files make it user friendly for use with a frontend and/or cabinet.

I've gone the rounds with Demul. See below for more help:

The legacy directx9 driver in demul .5.7 was an afterthought and is horrible.  If you're stuck with directx9, best to use version .5.6

If I were you I'd take a hard look at the video filter/options in Demul for this game.

If they work on your desktop PC, mimic those same settings. IE: "checked/unchecked" Transfrom Z, etc.
Compare your setting to those on another PC where the game works well.
See if it will work when the two computers are set to the exact same video options.
Also be SURE you have the correct BIOS support file for the game.

If your arcade PC is still not working, then you may indeed have insufficient hardware. Your video card or CPU may not be up to snuff.

Be aware that just because MAME games work well on your system, Demul games may not. They work differently. MAME strictly enforces the concept that everything, including 3D video, is emulated. The heavy work is done by the CPU. Very little on the video card. Demul on the other hand embraces the idea that if a PC has a modern 3D video card, why not use it to show the best graphics possible for the somewhat newer games that it emulates. Therefore, if your video card is not very good, you may not get good graphics ever with Demul no matter how you tweak it. This is not to say you need some brand new $300 card. Mine is rather old (Nvidia Quadra workstation card) but plays Demul & Crazy Taxi just fine.

Anyway...just another idea or two to play with while you figure this out. Be patient. Emulation is the wild wild west. It takes time and perseverance.

Why does it say legacy driver if you're using .5.6 ?

It wasn't a legacy driver back then.  :lol

Did you do a fresh install of .5.6, or just copy the exe over?

Besides BadMouth's iniput & advice (which is good advice by the way), I'd also recommend you check your video settings for Crazy Taxi/Demul.

When running Demul, on the main menu, go to CONFIG, then VIDEO and literally "check" the following:
- List Sorting
- Modifier
- Use Filter

The rest of the video options remain UNchecked.

On my set up, Crazy Taxi works/looks best with these video settings. Great graphics. Smooth gameplay.
I don't know if the video settings are part of your problem or not but let me know if this helps at all.

When it was first released, I tried running Crazy Taxi using Demul .57 on my cab which is running XP (and therefore limited to DX9).
The wheels of the car were missing among other crazy graphics glitches.
On the atomiswave racing games, the road disappears.

It's the legacy drivers.  From the Demul .57 WIP:
Quote
From this version old DX9 GPU plugins (DXv3 and DXLegacy) are obsolete, although they are still supported and included in current package. Further development of the DX9 plugins is stopped for now.

Mmmmmmmm. OK. I'm running Demul on a Windows 7 machine. Maybe that's why I'm not experiencing the same issues as icecube.
Sounds like reverting back to version .56 may be the best fix.

Hello, sorry for not responding, I actually upgraded my cab's os yesterday to vista, to take advantage of directx11
With the DirectX11 plugin, I get that demul has stopped working
With legacy, A ton of audio lag, and I can't even get to the NAOMI boot screen
v3 loads a black screen which fades to white, this sound seems laggier than legacy. This eventually just turns into a black screen
I will keep playing around with them, and report back

If you just upgraded yesterday, it probably hasn't performed enough updates to get to the service pack that contains directx11 yet.
It took mine a few days of windows updates.  Also, your video card will have to be directx11 compatible (I think mine is only 10, but it still works).

run dxdiag to see what version you are on.

I made sure to get all the upgrades, im at directx11, on service pack 2.
However, I believe at this point my hardware may just not be up to it, especially running vista now, rather than xp.
If this doesn't work, I still have the pc game that runs fine...
