Question about Z26 -- Atari 2600 emulation
« on: November 13, 2003, 08:54:11 am »
I have downloaded the Z26 emulator from Stuzza's site that has remapped MAME keys for esc, etc.  I am running MAMEwah and have all the paths setup and is pointed to the .exe.  I also have a full set of 2600 roms ready to go.  Everything seems to be there, but I cant get anything to run.  Is there something I am missing--a special file needed other than what you download with the emulator?  The other question is--do the roms have to be unzipped?  All mine are zipped right now.  That is the only thing that I can think of.  Any other suggestions??  It should be a pretty straight forward process I would think, but something is missing.
Thanks for any help.

I forget exactly what it was, but it was something stupid.  Off the top of my head, I am thinking you had to give the full rom path on the command line.  It was either that or it had to be unzipped.

Still I can forgive that because Z26 is such a great emulator of the Atari 2600.

From memory, I think that the roms needed to be unzipped.  Try unzipping and see how you go.

Thanks guys.  I unzipped a few roms and then it worked.  A couple more questions however:
Can you adjust Z26 to load roms to full screen automatically? I get the roms loaded to about 3/4ths screen.  But there is no menu or status bar that I can find with Z26 to adjust different parameters, etc. that is found with other emulators, such as custom inputs for joysticks, video, sound, etc.  Does Z26 have any of these adjustment features?  Where are they found?  Is there a way to get an options menu to appear to adjust such things?

Also, I have a large set of roms for Atari 2600 (1700).  Is there a way to unzip all the files at once?  I would not want to unzip each one, one by one.  I know there must be a mass-unzip process, but have never done it and wondering how to.

Thanks.

Z26 has some command line switches you can use for different screen settings.  I use the "-v1" option for full screen mode (can't remember what res this is though?)  You can set this as a "default option" in the cfg file of that emu in mamewah so everygame will be loaded full screen.

Any recent version of Winzip or Winrar can unzip multiple zip files at once.  With Winrar, you simply highlight all the zip files in your directory and right click anyone and go extract files.

I have downloaded the Z26 emulator from Stuzza's site that has remapped MAME keys for esc, etc.

How do you remap the keys to match Mame?

I've downloaded z26(2.09), but the read me files don't mention how to do it.

from the readme:

After typing z26 without any parameters, type F1 to get more help.

You get some help screens describing the available controls and some
command line options.  Move the mouse up and down to see the different
screens and press a mouse button to return to the ROM list.  Or you can
Press PgUp and PgDn to scroll through the screens, and <Esc> to quit.

Z26 doesn't allow you to reconfigure the keys through a config file.  The mappings are hard coded in assembly in the source code, so if you know how to program it, go right ahead.  Otherwise, grab the compiled, mame-ified version directly from Stuzza's site.
