- Personally, Im going to go opposite on many of these. I like Pit Fighter.

Its not much of a fighting game.. but its frickin Hilarious!

I mean come on.. guys in leather masks. Spiked haired chicks. The crowd stabbing you. It looks like some sort of twisted S&M fetish porno. I laughed my butt off when I saw it arrive in the arcade, and found it hard to fathom how they got away with actually getting it green lit all the way to actual production. Did they have placeholder sprites of Smurfs all the way up till day of Cabinet Building? heh
As shallow as it is, its actually fun to play. Its just that its more of a beat-em-up than an actual fighting game.
- As for MK... I remember how cool the realistic looking, huge sprite, game was. It was much more simple than something like SFII.. but it was still fun, and I really loved the look and attitude of the game... rather than the cartoony and almost Disney-Esc fighters.
I still dont quite get while ppl prefer MKII... over MK3. MKII was a let down for me. While there were some cool new characters & moves in there... the character digitization wasnt good. I was thinking we were going to be seeing hi-resolution photographic quality captures. Instead, they just hand colored over the low quality captures... and the colors and shading made it look like a cartoon again. Plastic-looking, unrealistic, colors that were way too saturated. The animations were not as good as the original either.. Most especially.. the 'waiting - ready' animations. UGG. The characters seemed smaller too.. but maybe that was an illusion. I also didnt like the look of certain characters, such as the new SubZero.
When MK3 came out, I was initially scared of trying to learn the new mechanics due to the money it would take, and how quick I could have gotten stomped by the skilled players. The speed, intensity, and combo system looked awesome, and I caved in and started learning when nobody was on the machine. Soon got a few combos off, and I loved it. So much more interesting and rewarding than the simplistic MK1 & II format.. which was a bit too slow and to predictable. Its also more realistic, in that once youve been clocked good enough, you become a punching bag to a rapidfire striker. I also loved the run button. It added a whole new speed and intensity to the game.. and made things a lot less predictable.
Even though the graphics were that same cartoony crud.. the new gameplay made up for it. Maybe its because I was never a hardcore player in that game.. so didnt see what others saw, such as possibly a poor game balance due to victories that are too 'cheap'.
I dont count MK4 as an MK game. Looked horrible. Played it once to confirm... it Sucked.
Street Fighter - Tried it once in mame.. didnt enjoy.
SFIICE - Was probably my Fav SF. I didnt care about Hyper speed versions, because AFAIK it was still the same game.. and the speed generically added similar to upping clock speed rather than a programmed and balanced range between slow and fast. I do like the new moves in CE however.
SFII Rainbow / Bootleg Hacks - Some of these are really fun. Dragon Punches that travel half the screen. Air Launched fireballs. Faster Special moves. (which helps on characters like ChunLi, whos leg spin move was too slow).
Street Fighter Alpha
SF III: 3rd strike (or 2nd impact better?)
SSF II: Turbo (or non-turbo?)
- didnt bother with above. After so many versions of SFII with so little changed, I didnt care to play any more SF Variants. I didnt get into that Anime style where the entire screen is filled with beams and projectiles from an epilepsy inducing 'super-attack'.
Tekken 2 (seems to run best of the Tekkens or I'd go 3 but I'm not yet sure this will run, in Mame, on my cabinet PC)
- Didnt really play Tek2. Graphics looked pretty rough. Control looked quirky & unintuitive. But Tekken3.. is da Bomb. Its not perfect, in that its still quite quirky in relation to real combat. However, its very playable, and very enjoyable. The shear amount of moves possible are great. Whats great about Tek3, is that the animations are 3d motions captures from real martial artists. Its one of the most realistic as a result. Like the music too.
King of Fighters 98 - Too cartoony for me. Gameplay seemed generically boring.
Virtua Fighter - liked music and sfx.. but graphically & gameplay wise, it mater
X-men v SF (probably not and will go with just M v C) - I played a few games of the first.. .and it was intersting... but just too much projectile / magic warfare.
Yie Ar Kung Fu - Thats more of a beat em up scroller..
Killer Instinct - probably my alltime favorite fighter, up there with Tekken3. Similar to SFIIce in gameplay.. but far superior in all aspects. Featuring hundreds of possible user created combinations, combo-breaking system, 'Unbreakable-Combo Creations' that can be countered / stopped, Hold and Release moves for bonus damages & visual effect, shadow-moves if you broke a combo, great music, cool characters & backdrops.
KI2 - Didnt care for it much. Orchid changes were hideous. Characters were less fluid, awkward controlling, too much delay, too slow. Some backdrops looked too cartoony. Too many horribly looking explosions that obscured visibility of characters.
Samurai Shodown - orig. Limited, but fun.
Soul Calibur - Wanted to like it... but it was way too awkward to control.. Very unrealistic. Way too slow and tame (and lame) for weapon combat.
Karate Champ - good choice
