Backwards compatibility with Roms?
« on: November 12, 2003, 06:35:42 pm »
Maybe this is a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway. Why are some MAME roms, even if seemingly unupdated, not backward compatible?

Example: Download the latest crush.zip (Crush Roller) or crush2.zip/crush3.zip. Run it in MAME 0.59. Doesn't work! It says "missing crush.4a". How come it was removed, even if the rom crush.zip has been in mame since 0.1?

I think the reason is usually either:

a) they found a better rom/dump
b) they moved some roms to different parent/clone set
c) some rom(s) were re-named.

I don't know but I suspect the one you mention was probably renamed somehow (?)  Try ClrMAMEPro on it, it will rename/re-arrange if possible to fix...

I've tried ClrMamePro, and it doesn't see anything wrong with it. I'm using my "MAME 0.59" dat file I made using the exe.
