asteroids / lunar landing
« on: June 08, 2013, 02:25:57 pm »
Picked up a asteroids machine today and started doing some research. The side art didn't match up with other cabs i saw and i found out its a lunar landing side art.Its a early asteroids from what i've read due to the yellow instructions as aposed to white writing. And it has the "owl eye" coin slots. The cab is in great condition other then the wear to the control panel.
Was the asteroids game ever put in a lunar landing cab at the factory maybe in the very early makings?Or was it just converted? Is it a rare madol due to the coin slots and yellow instruction writing?
So far the game powers up and the red led on the board lights, but the vector monitor is not working and i notice right away that one of the large blue filter caps is bulged and leaked.
Who has parts for these monitors?I know they are a total different monitor from others, but is there a way to use something else such as an old b/w computer monitor or something?
Its my first vector and has been at top of my wanted list so i'm happy to have it and would like to get it running. My wife actually found it at a yard/estate sale and called me early in the morning. You wouldn't believe what we paid.
Any links to parts for the monitor would be a huge step forward. Thanks in advanced.

Asteroids and lunar lander both used the same cabinet, just different artwork and cp controls.
They both used horizontal black and white vector monitors and the same power brick so it would make sense for one to be swapped out for the other.
Klov will have some good info on vector (xy) monitors.
Also check out www.arcarcxmission.com for manuals  there should be an Atari service manual that covers multiple machines from that era.
Also check out www.therealbobroberts.net and go to the monitor Id page to see what monitor you have.
Bob Roberts also has the big blue capacitors for the Atari power supplies.

That's pretty cool. When it was clear Asteroids was going to be a big hit, they just threw the game in some leftover LL cabs. I have an early-run Asteroids as well, but it has the Asteroids art. Mine also has the Owl Eyes door, yellow text, and the board had the original ROMS until I bought the HSS kit (well worth it, BTW). The only non-original part on it is the repro control panel, with is brand new and looks mint.

I have run into multple Lunar Landers in Asteroids cabinets as well.  Some have been converted back because Lunar Landers are so rare and Asteroids cabinets in great shape are so easy to get.  Or at least they were for a long time.

I've done some research and found a couple sites that said some very early asteroid units came in the lunar cabs. One site said the number was around 200 and another said up to 1000.My cab has all the signs of very early. It has the 2 stickers on the back but one has pat. numbers on it and the other just says 3 amps.On the boards inside though they all have stamped in red ink the same number 517.I read in a few places that may indeed be the serial but i'm not sure.
Jason, are you a member of KLOV? There might be guys that can help you with that monitor board.
I'm not currently a member but i'm going to join up with them and see if i can gain any more knowledge on this and my other machines.I do often go on the site and just haven't got around to joining up yet.
I looked at the bob roberts link and found just about everything i would need to get the game going but i didn't find the big blue caps that are in the monitor just the big blue one for the power supply but i may have been looking in the wrong place and have to spend more time on the site.
I also have the game and monitor paper work with the folder that originally came with the game.If anyone ever needs a scan of it let me know.It says its the first printing and the monitor paperwork is for my eh g05-801.And again guys, thankyou for any and all help.

I joined up there but can't post yet unless i get a member to give the good word for me.
I am finding that its very hard to find parts for the monitor.Evan roberts website has the cap kit and large cap listed but i can't click them and ad to the shopping cart,i assume that means he's out of stock on them. But my search will continue because i'd really like to bring this one back to life.Cosmeticly it only needs the control panel overlay and new buttons and a repaint on the coindoor, but thats the easy stuff.

Sorry,
I thought you were talking about the power brick big blue caps when I said bob Roberts has them.
Check the rating on the caps you need and contact bob, he may have them, either that or try some one like mouser or jameco

Two different monitors were used in Asteroids. Since yours is very early, it should have come with a G05-801... 802's are a drop in replacement if complete, but they are very different monitors. Some of the 801 parts are difficult to find.

This guy is good at repairs: http://www.arcadesolution.com/index.html

Asteroids is a labor of love... I have about a grand in mine getting it nice, but they're usually only worth $350 or $400.

What they originally came with is a crapshoot as to what's in there now.  No telling what someone did to it over the next 30 years.

Thats an 801 regulator board in the pics.

I didn't say it isn't.  I was addressing the idea that going by the manufacturing timeline is pretty much irrelevant now unless you know the game has never been worked on.

It does have a 801 in it.And all the other boards appear to be numbered the same and looks to all be original.I did send off a e-mail to bob roberts and he wrote back saying he'd put together a cap kit for me and also send the 2 blue filtering caps for the monitor power supply. That was the hardest stuff to find so i'm very happy to have been refered to him. After i get the monitor recapped i'll be moving on to the other usual parts that get replaced.I never really knew much of vector monitors and had never had one in anything i owned so i had no idea how hard it was to find parts for.Always had regular monitors and have a bunch of spares so never really had problems.I've done alot of research and learning and have alot more to go but i will have the harder to find parts and be able to get started on the restoration.Just can't wait to see that monitor fire up,wish me luck
