Mamewah Game Resolutions
« on: November 12, 2003, 10:23:35 am »
Hi all,
Just purchased a cab with Mamewah and everything is up and running fine. But a lot of the resolutions that the games are using are messed up. For example, Galaxian insists on opening up in full screen (I'm running a 28" monitor) - so its interesting seeing Galaxians right in your face, but its not terribly authentic! Similarly, some Jap shooters (Donpachi for example) run in far too small a "box" resolution. So how do I change the default resolution for certain games - or better still, is there a utility that I can run that will adjust all games on my HD to the correct authentic resolution? Do I adjust something in MW or Mame itself? If its relevant, I'm running a 15Khz picture.

Apologies if I've missed something obvious - but I'm learning quick!

Cheers

p.s. Best idiots guide for MameWah is where??

You need to setup MAME itself for the correct resolutions.  Since it is running at 15khz, are you using an ArcadeVGA card (I suspect probably so)?  If so, you could try my resolution program available at http://mamewah.mameworld.net/downloads.html to setup the resolutions (generate INI files) for each game.

Also at the above page, you can get the MAMEWAH latest download, which includes a Readme document (if you do not have it already), which explains most things about MAMEWAH.

As a matter of interest could I ask where you bought your cab?

Thanks for the links Minwah, the resolutions tool sounds like what I need.

My cab was a private purchase in the UK - but I think you must know him (he links to your site), and he thoroughly recommended Mamewah.

Cheers

What does your tool do exactly MinWah?
I run a regular monitor, so is this something I could benefit from?
I let MAME run games at whatever resolution it wants, but I don;t know if it's the best way to do it or not. Some of my games are off-center (mostly neo-geo ones) so I'm guessing they're running at a resolution the monitor was never aligned at. Unfortunately when I designed my cabinet I didn't make the monitor controls available so I never fixed the screen centering.

Is it a Jap-style cab that was on ebay per chance ;)

papasch: the tool is intended only for the ArcadeVGA - MAME's 'resolution auto' does not always pick the best resolution for each game.  It would not really be beneficial to you.  You could try making a neogeo.ini and force a different resolution for those games, if you are bothered about the centering thing...
