Sega Genesis Plug-n-play?
« on: June 01, 2013, 08:37:19 pm »
Anybody have one of these:

http://dealnews.com/SEGA-Genesis-Classic-Console-w-80-pre-loaded-games-for-43-free-shipping/741402.html

I'm not a big fan of the console clones, but this one comes with everything for 40 some dollars and looking at the included gamelist that's pretty much all the good games released for the genesis.

I was a Nintendo guy growing up, never owned a sega console save the gamegear.  I was going to track down a genesis and some games, but this might be a better alternative.  I'm just wondering if it's like the NES on the chip systems where half the games don't work.

Here is the game list link for anyone interested:

http://www.meijer.com/assets/product_files/pdf/sega_games.pdf

Its not a bad list of games for a non-genesis person. It is probably all you could hunt down anyway without shelling out a ton of cash. It is missing those hard to find games like castlevania bloodlines, contra hard corps, phantasy stars, TMNT hyperstone etc. Most everything else good on the genesis is either as good or better on the nintendo version or the arcade version.

I have one. I also have the portable. Here's a quick rundown.

Yes, they are basically emulators on a chip. The sound is WAY off; approximately 6-8 octaves too high. The cartridge compatibility is actually surprisingly high.

The video is also very good. The genesis had a number of different sony brand video output chips. Each revision gave you varying quality video output.

The controllers are IR so you have to setup your console in order to have your controllers point at the unit all the time. That can be a pain.

The units only contain 40 authentic retro genesis games. The other 40 are homebrew-like small games created by Tec Toy.

Overall, I'd avoid it unless you can find it for cheaper. If you have a dollar general store near you try there. They had them some months back for less than 30 dollars.

its the same as the sonic shaped one that I have and yes there garbage.

the games sounds is off period and sounds like non of my originals the speeds are off there just goofy and wonky.

they dont hold over a low amount on the sd before the console is confused and reads non becuase it is over 30 or so in one folder type thing.

original hardware or pc emu the rest are all silly IMHO and I have tried various ones and there all bad news IMHO lol.

Thanks for the info guys.  I guess I'll pass for now unless I can find a really good sale on them.

Maybe you ended up with one of the earlier versions?

A friend of mine did reviews on a number of AtGames (the manufacturer) and he gave me all of his review stuff including some atari flashback stuff. The genesis clone he gave me has very accurate emulation when it comes to speed and visuals.

I was actually making a tiny bartop using a 5 or 7 inch screen and was looking for one of the sonic branded units but the newer sonic shaped models have removed the SD card slot and wired controllers. When i couldn't find one of the older models i just scrapped my plans. My idea was to make a dedicated streets of rage bartop.

Yeah, unfortunately for $40 dollars it is a real hard pill to swallow. You can probably look around your local thrift shops and craigslist for a real console and a handful of games for that much. However, you won't ever find some of the games on this list. Golden Axe 3 was never released in North America in cartridge form, only through the Sega Channel. Streets of Rage 3 was panned to the point where very few were made. It's quite a collectible in cart form these days.

I have a soft spot for the portable version. it's just as good as the console one and the sound is passable for me considering its a portable. It also has an SD card slot for loading your own roms. Best of all, the portable unit has legally licensed capcom games including Mega Man: The Wily Wars, Street Fighter Special Champion Edition and Super Street Fighter.

mine had had like 3-8 out of the 80 that were real and they were something I never even heard of back in the day except like 1-2 sonics alex kid and I dont even remember the rest becuase there them type of games.

I did like the wireless feel of the controller shaped like wii controls though believe it or not they felt quality build and were resposive as if it was a wii mote button and D-pad that is.

I never did try the wireless part but I am not even a big fan of the wii like that so I stucj with using them as a hand controller just like I do the wii.

I use a controller if it is possible on anything I can over the wii mote lol.
