Heh, guess I need to update No Name MAME again. And I was thinking about taking a coding break soon too. :(

Why don't you give yourself a break and just update No Name every second or third Mame release?

*shrugs* Maybe I will. Or maybe I'll just give myself a break and skip this release.

I used to be better at keeping up, but now a new mame (including the u# updates) comes out almost every week.  I've slowed down and try to do one or two analog+ releases per full mame release now.  And I haven't done 2 very much resently, although I think I would have made it if [haze] had waited till this weekend.  ::)  ;)

Yawn, will someone let me know when they get the sound working (and both titles out) for the Namco Classic collections games. I am not upgrading again until that happens.

OK then. As of now I'm on a coding vacation. :D I'll probably work again in a week or two.

your lack of excitement scares me.  Several new game systems were emulated as of this version.  As far as major game systems go all that is left is cps3, naomi, neogeo 64 and that last midway system (hercules, trident, wtf was that called again?)

Adding sound to re-hashes of a cheezy namco remake title might be cool, but I don't think it warrants a upgrade.

It barely gets 4 FPS on my Athlon2700+ machine  :-X
There's a bunch of new CHDs with this release (7 I think) but none of them are anyway playable on my machine.
I realise it's by no means a simple task, but do you think one day CHD games will be playable on average speed machines, or do we have to wait until 10Ghz super-processors are invented?

You'll have to wait for the new processors.  Unless the mame devs approve hardware acceleration for 3d rendering these games will never get *much* faster.

I am waiting for realistic glowing buttets and slow fading "trails" in vector games such as Asteroids.  It may never happen, but I can always hope.

That'd be cool, but it could never be a patch on the bullets on a vector screen :(

Hehe, I feel that same way.   I was at Funspot yesterday and all I could keep looking at was how bright the shots and saucers are.   If mame could somehow emulate that, I would be quite amazed!  I was also surprised at how many of the color vector games there are using raster monitors.  Color vector monitors must be either *very* expensive or hard to come by ( or both even :D ).

it actually could be possible to apply a fadding trails filter thru direct x, althogh im just barely started working with it and have no clue how difficult it would be to impliment. Would probobly have to redo the vector game emulators for support.

I just finished playing a few games of asteroids and what's weird is I distinctly remember that the player's ship, shots, and saucers are much brighter than the asteroids themselves.  In mame of course everything is white.  Asteroids is also the only game I can think of that has the trails etc.  Asteroids Deluxe looks sooo
good @ 1024x768 w/ the artwork behind it.   :)

I played a nice Asteroids machine last Saturday and the shots are really intense, totally different than Mame.

Also, if those color vectors at Funspot have raster monitors in them, then they probably have computers in them too, since I am not aware of a way to get the original boardsets to output to a raster monitor.

That's what I was figuring too.  I think the only color one w/ a vector monitor was Gravitar.  Space Duel and Tempest both had what seemed to be raster monitors.  I'm not an expert on monitors so I could be wrong.  The thing I was looking for was the brick like pattern which I see on all of the raster games and these 2 vector games had it.  I was closely inspecting monitors because I'm still waffling on getting a real arcade monitor.  I'm afraid that vector games will look awful and I won't be able to get every resolution like I can now.  Vector games look pretty decent w/ a PC monitor and with some of AdvanceMame's effects I get a decent looking "vintage" look on raster games.  I double the image size and apply the "mean" resize filter which causes a blur and I also use scanlines.  It comes close but not close enough for me.  :)

MAME emulates Asteroids and the other vector games just fine...IF you use the right kind of MAME, and the right hardware.

Hmm, I downloaded their source and looked for interesting stuff, but I didn't feel like downloading the full mame tree to diff against.  I wonder if their "enhancements and fixes" have been rolled into mame proper.

I've spent the last 2 days on and off trying to get raster games to look better on my 19" PC monitor.  I've definetly got it a lot better.  Using AdvanceMame I use generate-double-scanlines.  I then apply filterx for horizontal games and filtery for vertical games.  I also lowered the brightness to .94 which makes the colors a lot less "pastel-y".   I also tried fiddling w/ the "screen" pot on my flyback to see if I could get that washed out brightness effect you see on TVs and arcade monitors but it doesn't seem to have any effect other than making the background grey instead of black. The scanlines give the brick-like pattern and the filter functions provide the "bleeding color" effect.  Overall I like it much better.

Now, it's time to go play some Berzerk!     ;D

If I remember correctly, all of ZVG's changes have been rolled into the DOS version of MAME.
