Thanks.  Do those modifications impair your ability to play online?

So has anyone tried MK 9 on an arcade monitor??? Pics, video, or thoughts would be helpful.  My mame cabinet has SF button outlay and I hate playing MK games on it.  is it worth playing this on a mk cab?  I have one lying around i would just need an arcade vga.  game look amazing,i am a big mk fan but i have only played this once on xbox.  i have been dying to get an easy solution to play it.

You wouldn't want to play this on a true arcade monitor.  A game that is meant to run at 720p or higher isn't going to look real good at 240p  ;)

If you can manage to run it on 480i, which is the same refresh rate as 240p, it won't look bad.  I play SSFIV on my cab with CRT TV through component and it looks pretty darn good.  Not hi def, but good.

I'm not sure if anyone is interested, but the current boss mod was a remnant of an old ps3 hack... it made some files "weird" and the images looked kind of bad.

I made a proper pc-version of the mod found here:

http://www.mediafire.com/download/z5aw92hfzuis3w1/Ultimate+Boss+Mod+1.1.rar

Does lots of other tweaks as well, it's all in the readme.txt

I'm glad you are all talking about this game.  I finally got around to buying it on Friday and I've played around with it for a bit.

First things first, here are my specs of my arcade PC:
-  27" Betson Multisync Monitor (800 x 600 max res)
-  Dual Core AMD CPU 2.86 gHz
-  1 GB ATI HD 4xxx series
-  2 GB or DDR2 Ram
-  Running Windows XP 64-bit (I will be upgrading to Windows 7 64 - read on)

As I said earlier, I have my game machine running Windows XP 64 and unfortunately, it doesn't work with MKK.  I was able to download it in Steam and double-click to play it.  However, it said something like, "First time installing files" and then it had 3 steps.  One of which was installing DirectX.  On step 3 it gave me an error message (see below) and would not run on XP.  Period.

So, I grabbed a spare hard drive and did some experimenting.  I managed to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64 (after several attempts; my Betson was fighting me all the way).  But I finally got Windows 7 to lock onto 800 x 600 @ 60Hz (it kept defaulting to 75Hz which was annoying).  I'll probably end up staying 64-bit (I had XP 64 before).

Everything looked great and it ran smoothly in demo mode, so far.  I was a little disappointed that the aspect ratio was locked at 16:19 on my 4:3 monitor (the image is letter-boxed with the black bars on the top and bottom).

I was VERY excited!  Until............  I tried playing the game.  First off no manual.  No big deal, but the Options screen really , really needs it.  I finally figured out the the left side is player 1 and the right side is player 2 in the option screen.  Presets 1, 2, 3 & 4 mean nothing.

That said, 2 MAJOR things are broken (I disagree with the "great port" comments above):
1)  Once you assign keys for the keyboard, they are "broken" in the menu and it ignores them, using the defaults like the letter "G" and such.  So you need a keyboard out to play on a control panel using an encoder.  (Fear not, I've solved this dilemma with a workaround patch.  More on that later).
2)  You cannot play with 2 players at the same time using only 1 keyboard.  It's Street Fighter IV all over again!  (Again, this is solved with the workaround used for SFIV).

Before I figured out the patch, I HATED that I wasted my money on this thing.  After it worked perfectly due to the patch however...  Meh, it's OK.  It looks nice on my CRT arcade monitor, but it's really meant for an HDTV setup in widescreen.  I'll have to play it more to decide for sure.  (It looks GORGEOUS on my 8 core dual graphic card home PC with LCD).  But again, it will probably take a heftier PC to run it in high res.

I'm planning on making a video to add to my channel showcasing the game and talking about all pros and cons, etc.  I will also create another tutorial on how to patch the game using the same method outlined here on SFIV:  http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,96377.msg1015107.html#msg1015107

What bugs me is that the people who port these games to PC don't really THINK about what keyboard features people need.   I wish they would contact us and ask.  It would save a ton of money and time for everyone.

It amazes me that there are still fighting game fans out there that haven't played this.  Say what you want about the technical balance, ect of Street Fighter, but this game redefined the amount of content and polish you should expect from a fighting game.

I have to agree with Howard. I've been an MK fan since 92-93 (the Genesis days) and This has to be the greatest fighting game released in many years! Not just as an MK game but fighting game in general.

I wouldn't go that far, some people prefer other franchises in terms of nut and bolts gameplay and what not, but what I like about it is the fact that for the last 15-20 years fighters have said "ok you get a weak premise, 20 random characters, a single boss, an end cut-scene and if you are really lucky an opening cut-scene... that'll be 60 dollars"  Where Mortal Kombat and the recent Injustice says.... "Ok here's every single character from our three best sequels and a couple of bonus characters, the arcade mode you are used to, and a cohesive story mode that is not only fun to play but actually explains who these characters are and why they are fighting. Oh and while we are at it, how about 4-player mode, 300 goofy challenges, 4 mini games, a metric ton of unlockables, and a model viewer with extensive stats mode so you can track everything right down to how many times Sonya picked her nose."  That's actually 60 dollars worth of content for what would normally be a tired old formula that's barely changed since 1991.

Btw guys, I've modded this game extensively.  I was doing it over on one of those modding/skinning sites but I completely forgot about the mentality of the types of people who run those things, so I had to quit.  Right now I'm a little under the weather, but once I feel better I'll start a thread with all of my mods, including a beta exe for an un-gimped Shang Tsung that can morph into anybody.

I wonder if you had any issues with characters moving in slow-motion during fights like I'm having.  I just started looking into it and it looks like this is a relatively common issue with some possible solutions posted online.
I'll try some of those tonight, but if you found something that helps, please let me know.

I noticed the slow moving characters if i had the game settings turned up too high... not sure if that helps or not but if i use the "auto-detect" when playing i don't see any slowdowns.

I also used auto-detect and the game selected some decent quality settings even though my PC is not uber-powerful (3.0GHz Intel Dual Core - nVidia GTS 250).  However, bringing most of the eye candy down did not help the situation.  This problem seems related to certain configurations issues specific to the different GPUs.

FSA slows the game down considerably.  Turn it off and you'll get a massive speed up with minimal graphical detail loss.  The same goes for shadows... the lowest setting looks fine.

That's good news, especially because I"ll be running this mostly in my CRT TV 480p so I won't miss the additional detail.  I'll check this out tonight.

Thanks for the tips.

This is very weird but decreasing my AA and shadow settings actually makes the game perform worse.  I did some tests always in the Street stage with the same characters and simply backing up the left fighter as far as it goes to show the giant monster in the background and constantly jumping backwards.  Each of those settings would decrease my framerate as I reduced its quality, especially turning AA off.  That made my avg FPS go from mid 40's to mid 30's, according to FRAPs.

Is my test method flawed or is there any logic to this?

The only thing that speeds up gameplay for me is the config file posted here, under "frame limiting".  It forces the game to render fewer frames, resulting in full speed play for me, although perhaps a bit less fluid but I hardly notice it.  I should point out the tests described above were done with the original settings file.

Has anybody been able to trick the game into running when the display is set to 640x480?

Just changing the resolution in the ini file and setting it to read-only doesn't do it.  I still get the application error:
"d3derrror: your monitor's aspect ratio of 4:3 is incompatible with this game"

If anybody know of any clever tricks, please let me know.

I was able to do this with the very inconvenient method outlined below, but it will hold me over until I purchase an LCD monitor and migrate fully to Win7.  Right now I have everything set up on WinXP and dual boot Win7 when I want to play MKKE.

Note that the method below requires a dual monitor setup if your main monitor doesn't support resolutions higher than 15kHz.

How to make MKKE display 640x480 on 15kHz monitor with component video:
- Used “Custom Resolution Utility” to add a 1024x768@60 (interlaced) resolution (=29Hz) to my main PC monitor
- TV should be off until game starts
- Set PC monitor as primary display and make sure it is set to 1024x768@29 in the nVidia Control Panel
- Make sure the game’s ini file is set to 640x480 (search for %appdata% folder)
- Once game starts, turn TV on but turn off when done because the TV’s resolution will revert to 1024x768
What this does is provide a high resolution on game startup so that the game will not complain about my obsolete TV display.  Once the game starts, it will immediately switch to 640x480 but it won't change the vertical refresh rate.  Because I've set my main monitor to 29Hz, it will send a 640x480@29Hz display signal to my CRT TV.

This is probably useless to everyone but wanted to just document it, instead of keeping it to myself.
