ACT-LABS + ArcadeVGA --Help!!!
« on: November 11, 2003, 04:01:22 pm »
Hey guys, I sure hope this hasn't been answered before, as the search function on this board isn't working very well for me. Anyways, I have an Act-Labs lightgun, and ArcadeVGA, and a D9200, using MAME 0.71. and DragonKing (version ?).

Everything works great, but when I goto use the lightgun, it shoots about 4-5 inches to the left of wherever I shoot. No matter how I calibrate it, still the same problem (or worse depending on what calibration movements I came up with) Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this?

I know it can be done, because all of the commerical (yuck) MAME Cabinet builders claim they have it working on their websites with this same setup. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

(If this is in the wrong forum please move it)

I have been playing with an Act-Labs gun recently. One thing: if the VGA card (any card not just the ArcadeVGA) is connected to the monitor via a cable which connects the H and V syncs together, the gun will not work. This does not affect the J-PAC conenction as the J-PAC does not connect the syncs together. It means a hand-wired cable must be connected to separate H and V syncs on the monitor and it also means the Ultimarc Video Amp must be used in separated sync mode, details of this are on the page www.ultimarc.com/vidamp.html.

Andy Warne posted the above message in the following thread:

http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=4;action=display;threadid=10990;start=msg96068#msg96068

I don't know if this is your problem or not, but anyway it fixed mine.  I added a wire to my standard resolution WGk7191 monitor's output cable for the vsync, and wired it correctly to the video card, and now I'm playing gun games on my cabinet.

I have a D9200/ArcadeVGA/Act-Labs Gun.
Which games are you trying to run?  Some seem to work better than others. For me,  Police Trainer and Sharp Shooter work fairly well. I have to calibrate the gun then use the in-game gun calibrations. Shots toward the edges are not very accurate and there are "wild" shots. Other games like Jurasic Park are pretty much unplayable.

The "white" calibration screen is not completely white at all resolutions.  There is a flickery black stripe running down the left edge of the screen.  The width of the stripe seems to very based on the resolution and the game. The gun is least accurate in this striped area.

Attached is a picture of what my calibation screen looks like. The top pic is the windows desk top at 392x 240 and the bottom picture is Sharp Shooter at 392x240. I have found that the calibration screen with the windows desktop at 640x480 looks good. However if I set SS to 640x480 and use hardware stretch I can't get the gun to calibrate so that it is even remotely playable.

Make sure you are not combining the Horizontal and Vertical Syncs on one wire.

Also, try downloading the utility from Ultimarc that allows 640x480 and 800x600 non-interlaced in 31Khz mode on the D9200, and try that with HW Stretch with a 640x480 or 800x600 res at 60Hz.
