Help resolving - "unable to open the keyboard device error 32"

I'm working with mame 0.90 binary and mala. When I try to launch a game from mala I get "unable to open the keyboard device error 32" and the game doesn't load. how is this fixed? At the moment I'm using a usb keyboard but will eventually hook up an IPAC 2 and wire a control panel.
