Configuring Mame's display options? Help?
« on: May 03, 2013, 05:05:27 pm »
Hi all,

Here's my goal:

I would like users to be able to change the volume easily from within any game in MAME.

I have a dedicated shift button. So, right now a shift combination brings up the in game display menu (volume, brightness, gamma, CPU overclocking etc...) typically tied to the tilda key "~".  This works pretty well. But the other day, someone was trying to lower the volume and accidentally switched to the gamma, adjusted it and got all confused.

Is there a way to change way options are available in this menu. Ideally for my situation, there would only be the volume adjustment.

Thanks!!!

I would say the only surefire way to make it people friendly is to put in a hardware volume control like the Griffin Powermate

Yeah, I certainly have thought of that, but really don't want to as my cabinet (3 sided 4 player cocktail) is finished. I'm hoping there is a software/configuration solution...

Thanks though! That product looks pretty slick. If I have to go that route, I'll probably use that link!

If you are using windows, download autohotkey app and use a sound volume script (google). You can map a key to alter the system volume.

Put your system volume to the highest setting, and adjust your amp accordigly so you don't have a user accidentally blow something.

I haven't tested a script like this yet, but have used autohotkey and assume this method would work without any issues.

imho users shouldn't be given the option to change the volume.  I know they are your friends but the general rule of thumb is to imagine how bad your stupidest friend could accidentally screw up your rig and multiply that by a factor of 10.

Been in tech support for a long time..... never underestimate the user's ability to do weird stuff to software.

Most keyboards and pc remotes have built in volume keys, so you can use those if need be.

Yes. I agree. I now know people are idiots when it comes to mashing on buttons like 2 year olds. I was shocked when some folks played my machine for the first time, within seconds they had paused it, brought up that menu, having no idea how to get out of it. I was amazed.

I still need a way to turn this thing up or down. Different situations call for different noise levels. Perhaps I will change the volume control to a shift command only I know. Something tough like [shift + three different buttons] to eliminate accidents.

Hmm...

Are there individual volume up and volume down commands in MAME?
