CPWizard and switching to Direct3d 8

I have CPWizard setup running MAME 0146u5 and it works great. I noticed though that running it on asteroids causes MAME to crash. I set the d3dversion from 9 to 8 and that fixed the problem but I get: unable to initialize direct3d everytime I open MAME or run a game. I am running Win7 64bit and DXDIAG shows DirectX version: DirectX 11.

What am I missing here?
