Can anyone with standard 19" CRT answer question please...
« on: April 20, 2013, 03:34:13 am »
I'm planning my first build and am fretting about a monitor.  I've definitely decided LCD because it's available, affordable and in some number of years when I need to replace a broken monitor I'll be able to find a replacement.  It's unbelievable there are absolutely no 4:3's anymore.  I got an ASUS 27" with 1ms refresh and the picture is very good if not excellent.  But at 27" with 16:9 ratio I'm worried about size of game play.  Centipede screen is 13.25 high x 10 wide and Defender is same high x 17 5/8" wide.  I was measuring what looked like a standard Ms. PacMan 19" monitor in an original cab and noticed the actual pixels of the picture are a lot less than 19".  The game wasn't on so I measured off the screen burn ghost image and figure the actual pixel x y dimensions are about 14" x 10".  The 27" monitor is 13.25" tall so it's very close.  I'm so used to giant TV's and monitors so looking at something this size just looks small but the numbers seem like they are OK.  If anyone has a CRT 19" and can measure the x y of the actual games pixels I'd be interested to see if it's close and will work.

Unfortunately, there really isn't much of a choice anymore.

The dimensions of the actual 'pixels' depend on a number of things such as the particular game resolution, how the monitor has been adjusted (there are sizing potentiometers for v and h), etc.  The distance from top left to bottom right of a 19" arcade monitor's displayable area is 19".
