Genesis Emulator and...
« on: April 17, 2013, 07:15:11 am »
Hey guys I stumbled across a video of an old game I wanted to play but it is for the Genesis.  I DLed a Genesis Emulator and found the ROM fine...and it worked fine.  So I went through looking for the top 50 Gen exclusive games(since I have SNES/Mame emulators already) and I found a great list of games.  But I cannot get any other game to work.  So my question is which Emulator do you use and can Genesis ROMs have more than one file like Mame Roms do or should they act like the SNES roms that only have the one file.  Also I plan to use with GameEx in the end.
Thanks,
Rich

Genesis (and SNES) roms can be multiple files, but the most common emulators use merged 'blob' formats, ie all the data from the cart joined up into one file with a header attached.

MESS (or UME) which are MAME based, but modified to run console/computer software as well, use 'correct' rom dumps where available, multiple files or single files.  Typically a MESS/UME set won't be fully compatible with other emulators for that reason, but is more correct in terms of representing what was in the cartridges.

I use Kega Fusion for the Sega consoles.

IIRC, there are a few bios files that you need for the emulator to work, but they aren't linked to any particular rom.
It's beel a loooong time since I set it up.

rtkiii, where did you get your Top 50 Genesis exclusive list from? I'm trying to exclude Arcade conversions (as I have them in Mame) and have looked for something similar

Thanks for the info guys!  I will give it some tries with your info.  As for the link...Maybe I went looking for exclusive but just found top 25/50 Genesis games.  As I was looking through I knew which were Gen Specific...I'll do some more searches and let you know if I find something more specific.  Sorry...that was a little misleading  :)

Yep, Fusion FTW.  There are a couple of newer Genesis emulators that have come along since, but Fusion is still top of the heap in terms of Genesis emulation IMO.  It also emulates Master System, Sega CD, and Game Gear.  It's actually one of my favorite emulators.

It's okay rtkii - I've probably pretty much done that too. I'm just a bit addicted to "top 50" type game lists at the mo as I try to sort what I want!

I DLed the emulator you guys suggested but only the same game and Phantasy Star 2 work.  I have like 7 files for Phatasy Star IV and it does not list them...they have an odd naming format.

Phantasy Star IV [!]
Phantasy Star IV [b1]
Phantasy Star IV [b2]
Phantasy Star IV [b3]
Phantasy Star IV [--BINGO! Either that, or I was attempting to say "before" but it was too many letters to type--]
Phantasy Star IV [b5]
Phantasy Star IV [b6]

needed all the files in the B# but that did not help.  The two games above work fine and seem to be just single file games.  Maybe I need the bios you guys mentioned.

EDIT:
The files above are all .zip files but contain a bin file of the same name inside.  Maybe i'll extract and see what that does.  I was thinking I

Extraced Phatasy Star IV [!].bin and it loads fine.  So what is the point of the B1-B6 files...anyone know?

Not sure if I am a fan of the "snow" when launching the Fusion Emulator.  I like the Gens? Emulator I DLed 1st  :)  And extracted games are working too.

You shouldn't see that when you launch a game from your front-end.

I was going to say.. use a FE and you won't see anything but goodness. I like fusion. it is real simple to setup and the controller config works great! The roms are small. Whole set is less than 500MB  I was rocking out to some ecco earlier.  I setup a brand new rig here in the office with hyperspin.

Extraced Phatasy Star IV [!].bin and it loads fine.  So what is the point of the B1-B6 files...anyone know?

That's GoodTools naming conventions.  Read all about it right here.  To be honest GoodSets are a bit much at this point.  Does anyone really need all those alternate and bad dumps?  I like No-Intro sets to the exclusion of pretty much everything else (disc images are a different story).

Yeah I deleted all the extra files and just kept the bin file.  Seems fine.  Thanks for all the help, guys!

For the goodgen romset, I used the renamer and it sorted out between regions and bad dumps and what not
