Cocktail/Coffee Table
« on: April 11, 2013, 03:42:04 pm »
Hi all,

Decided at the start of the week to build a cocktail/coffee table cabinet after realising it can all be relatively well disguised.

Made a few simple drawings on paper and decided to have a rough mock-up on sketchUp.

The front, back and sides of the cabinet will be thin ply covered with glassy black acrylic.
The control panel will be covered with a removable cover when not in use.
The top the same with either a glass or clear perspex sheet for protection.

The lid will be hinged to allow for the screen to be sat at any angle and be held by torsional lid stays.

Apologies for the poor graphics rendering. (Running windows on a virtual machine)

Interesting. What are you planning to do with the monitor cables?

Really interesting design you have(!), but I'm confused about the scale/proportions of the thing.

How high is the control panel? And the tabletop height (when in "concealed"/top-down position?)  Better yet, can you post up your .skp file?

How do you plan to keep your CP drawer from moving mid-game? What's holding the monitor in place (in either position?) Where do those removable panels go once they've been removed? Lots of questions still unanswered in the design pics.  (Believe me, I've fiddled with about 20 different variations on a convertible cocktail table and I've never been happy enough with any of them to move to a build phase.)

Like I said, I really like the lines of the design, but as long as you're going the Sketchup route, I think you'd be better served to fine tune some more in Sketchup, well before you even make the first cut.

@EightBySix Not too sure really cross that bridge when i come to it. Maybe box the monitor in.

@mcseforsale Big day out at the football (soccer)

@RyoriNoTetsujin Having a few problems with my virtual machine writing to USB so will get it up when i can.
The CP will be 410mm from floor level the right height to play from my sofa.
Table height will be 600mm, the draw will be secured by a sliding door bolt at the back of the panel that will go through the supports.
The monitor will be held with straps and will be at an angle of 15o
The panel will go where-ever it lands i suspect.
