Splicing yoke wires & using old degauss...
« on: April 09, 2013, 08:01:52 pm »
Hi.  Attempting my first CRT swap from a TV.  I salvaged a 25" tube from a (supposedly 27") TV my sister-in-law was tossing.  The tube model number is A63ADT26X05 (it also has the number A63ADT10X printed much smaller near the very top of the tube on a small sticker).  From what I can find out, this is a 25" tube that was sometimes used on Hantarex MTC 9110's. (read they came in 25" & 28" flavors?)  I measured the yoke resistance and horizontal was about 2.6 Ohms and vertical was about 6.4 Ohms.

Well, it fit nicely into the frame of an old model K7000 I had, and I was hoping to mate it with a WG K7400 chassis I have to use in my MAME cabinet (since it doesn't require an isolation transformer, simplifying installation).

The original yoke wires for horizontal and vertical were soldered into the TV chassis but they can unplug from the yoke itself.  I snipped them off the chassis, and was wondering if I can use some salvaged yoke connectors from an old arcade monitor, and just solder the wires which I snipped from the TV chassis to the wiring still attached to the old arcade monitor yoke connectors.  (effectively lengthening the yoke wiring in case I need the length, and making the wires detachable from either the yoke OR the chassis)

I have always known not to splice focus wires, but figured the yoke wires were ok.  Am I wrong?

Also, I really want to use the existing degauss coil mounted to the tube, although it looks slightly different than most coils I have seen on arcade tubes (this one is more rounded but still pretty thick, but does not have that heavy white rubber around it I usually encounter).  I'd have to splice an old degauss connector I salvaged from an arcade monitor to the existing degauss wiring also to make the connection to the K7400.

Do these modifications sound ok to perform to you guys?  This is my first TV tube swap, so I'm hoping it goes well.

Thanks for any help.   :)

For what it's worth, I've done both of these things in the past with SCART TVs.

Grundig solders the wires to the yoke whereas Loewe use a plug. I spliced a Grundig cable to use the Loewe plug and it worked fine. Plenty of heat shrink to keep it safe.

I have also used a degauss cable from a Philips tube with a Sharp Image chassis. Wasn't a problem.

So Grundig & Loewe are name brands you have spliced the yoke wires on and they had different connection types?  (Sorry, I'm in the US and aren't familiar with those brands.)
Sounds good then.  And the degauss would likely be fine to keep with the TV tube then and connect to the WG K7400 chassis?  Thanks.   ;D

You should be fine, but I'd probably double heat shrink the wires at the splice with plenty of overlap to the remaining insulation..  Voltages on the yoke can hit a couple thousand.  Not as bad as focus or (especially) the anode.

Got all the wires spliced.  Didn't see your post in time to do the double-heatshrink MonMotha, but thanks for the info.  It turned out pretty well, now I just hope it fires up ok, lol!
