Does anyone make vector monitor chassis anymore?
« on: March 27, 2013, 11:24:33 pm »
I've read in a few places now that vector tubes are the same as raster tubes, and that the only differences lie in the electronics that drive the guns.  Is that the case?

I know of an "arcade museum" somewhat close to me and they have a Star Wars sit-down cabinet with a dying green gun.  I don't know if it's actually the gun or if it's the chassis, but I want to try and source a solution for them, whichever it is.

How does it display color?  The colors can be anywhere on screen.  Are you sure it's not 3-gun?

edit: thank you, by the way.

If it is a sit down SW you sir are in luck. The big brains over at KLOV are reproducing the Amplifone (the monitor used in SW) 100%, minus the tube of course.

You can also look into repairing the Amp you have, it would probably be much easier than you think.

Either way, you need to head to KLOV and read up and ask questions.

It is a sit-down cab, but I'm fairly sure it's the green gun that's whack.  the red and blue look fine, but the green is well & truly out of focus.

Is it not true that the RGB vector monitors use the same tubes as raster RGB monitors?  There's nothing special about the insides of a vector monitor, is there?  I know they have phosphor screens just like raster monitors, but I imagine the windings of the yoke would differ... or at least the control circuitry for the deflector coils...  I dunno.  All I know is that tube is suffering.

Tubes are 100% the same as rasters, it's everything else that is different. The Amp rebuilds are all done using tubes gathered from TVs.

Like I said, a repair is probably the easiest, but head to KLOV and read up, they can likely answer your questions better than I can. Although I own 9 vector monitors (3 Amps) I've done very, very limited repairs on them, the true experts, and the ones who helped me through those repairs are on KLOV.
