Having issues with LED Blinky and Game EX
« on: March 17, 2013, 06:49:12 pm »
I have connected up my LCDs and they all light fine outside of Game Ex and in LED Blinky test software.  I was able to get the LCDs to light up at the start of Game Ex fine.  Then when I get to the game menu Only Player 1 Button 1, 5 and 6 light and Player 2 Button 1 lights.  No other lights work and it stays that way no matter what game I select.

I have my cfg folder pointed to the right location and I verify there are txt files in there for the games I have.  I am getting this error...12 times

1) Missing value in Settings.ini: [MameXmlFile].

I went into the LED BLINKY Troubleshooter but it just gives me the same message.  I created the mame.xml file and placed it in the plugins folder for LED Blinky in the GameEX Plugin folder.  NOW NOTHING LIGHTS at all.

Anyone have any ideas.  I think I have everything set correctly inside the config tool but I could be missing something.
Thanks,
Rich

1) Missing value in Settings.ini: [MameXmlFile].

From the config app, on the MAME Config tab, you need to set the value for MAME.xml

I do.  I had to run the command line command suggested on the LEDBlinky page.  I moved that to c:\gamex\plugins and pasted per the instructions.  Then I went into the tab you mentioned and browsed to the location.  No change.  Same buttons lit.

Are you still getting the error: Missing value in Settings.ini: [MameXmlFile]?

I'll assume the ALL CAPS is you being frustrated and not you yelling at me.

If you have the path to the mame.xml specified in the config app, but LEDBlinky is still reporting that the value is missing - is it possible you have LEDBlinky installed in more than one folder? Make sure the LEDBlinky folder is in the GameEx plugins folder and that you are running the LEDBlinkyConfig.exe from that folder.

If that's not the issue, then turn on the Debug Log and Verbose options, run GameEx and a game that does not light as expected, then email me the debug.ZIP file and I'll take a look at your configuration.
Robots will kill you.

No...I'm yelling at you!  :)  Just Kidding...it was accidental as I was typing while cooking and I thought..."---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- all caps..."  But went and posted anyway  :)

I remember seeing multiple settings.ini when I was searching for that file...which location should the settings file be in c:\gameex\plugins, right?

You know what...I think I remember running the intial config outside of Gameex in a folder I extracted to originally c:\LED Blinky.  I ran the setup and configured the LEDs.  Then I went into game EX and that is when I found out I needed to extract the files into the plugin folder for gameEx.  I bet I am updating the wrong file.  I'll test it later tonight and let you know.  Thanks for your help.

I removed any extra settings.ini files which I did have another one, even though I do not think it was referencing that file.  removed and behaves the same.  I also notcie it speaks when LED Blinky launches even though I have that disabled in the config settings.  Ran the debuag and V mode...attached .zip.
thanks

You are running the trial version - which always speaks "LEDBLINKY" and startup.

Your config does not have the path to the MAME.xml file. On the MAME Config tab, you need to select your mame.xml file. This is what I see in your settings.ini:
Code: [Select]
MameXmlFile=C:\GameEx\PLUGINS\LEDBlinkyIt should look something like this:
Code: [Select]
MameXmlFile=C:\GameEx\PLUGINS\LEDBlinky\mame.xml

I know have have something selected but I think I probably only went to the folder path and did not select the file itself.  I did that because of the cfg folder setting.  I was following suite  :)  Ok I will check that out tonight and let you know.  smart move to put the voice in the Trail...I hate it enough to want to pay $20  :)

Yes it is a smart move otherwise people would never pay him for all the hard work he's put into writing the software. But you feel he deserves to get paid right? You don't work for free do you?

I had to manually enter in the .xml file...it would not let me browse.  Even though the file was there it would not let me select it.  Once I typed it in it went ok.  Thanks for your help.  I did several tests and it seems to be working alot better.  Some games are off but I think if I go through those and reconfigure they will be fine.  Thanks again.

Headkaze - there are jobs and there are hobbies.  I'm not sure if this is arzoo's hobby or job.  I have my normal job that I get paid for.  And then I make movies for people to enjoy.  I spend about enough time on those to warrant pay but it is not expected.  The satisfaction of people veiwing my films is good enough.  I'm a director/editor...programmers in their own right are arists as well.  I would think people using their product would be very satisfying in itself...but I guess that is a per person opinion.  If Arzoo wants to offer a trial that is smart so his product gets the best possible exposure.  If the program is good enough it warrants payment...if not then it does not.  He did a smart thing enabling something that annoys the consumer to get them to buy....but no I do not feel I HAVE TO PAY...I have had it on my PC for 4 days and just now got it working.  I would like to play around and see if it does what I want it to do.  But honestly his customer service alone with him knowing I did not even own the full version he still helped me...that goes alot further.

I'm not sure if this is arzoo's hobby or job.

Sometimes they start out as a labour of love and then turn into something commercial later. There is a lot of extra work involved to make a product polished enough to go commercial. I have some software that is commercial and some that is free. Software like CPWizard is free but I do ask for donations although it's extremely rare when I receive one. So unless you nag people they don't feel obliged to donate money to a project which is partly why I don't update or support it anymore. So you can be sure that when you pay a programmer for the work he's doing you're actually ensuring it will stay alive and updated which is obviously a good thing if you find the software useful. If not you can be sure it will most likely become a low priority to the projects that do make money.

Oh and since LEDBlinky is bugging you to pay up then obviously it's a commercial product and he would like to be paid for it.

I went through and manually changed controls for certain games that were displayed wrong but there is one more thing I cannot figure out.  When game Ex starts Player 1 buttons 1, 5 and 6 are lit as well as Player 2 button #1.  I'm not sure why they are showing as I only use Button #3(space bar) and a menu button I added(enter) but neither of those light up.  Is there a place I can configure the GameEx menu controls to display the buttons needed to navigate the menu instead of the buttons currently lighting up which do nothing.
Thanks again for all your help.

I would suggest that rather than using the Light GameEx Controls option, you create a single frame animation that lights the buttons you want and set that as the FE Active Animation.

Correct. The FE Active Animation will only run when the FE is visible.

Okay so your comment "smart move to put the voice in the Trail...I hate it enough to want to pay $20" was that it annoyed you so much that you would pay for the software even if it didn't do what you needed? I misinterpreted that as you preferring not to pay for it and would only pay because you found the voice annoying.
