Cave -Setup Help
« on: February 22, 2013, 07:31:08 am »
I'm setting up a Cave menu in my Hyperspin wheel but i can't seem to get the "newer" games to launch (Ibara, Deathsmiles ect). It seems to be everything released after 2004. I'm running MAME .148 and the latest release of Hyperspin (i believe). I've tested them separately in both MAME and Hyperlaunch to no avail. I'm wondering if i need to roll back my MAME version, run them on a different emulator or what. Not sure where to go from here.

So i hope someone can shine a light on this.

Are you sure you are running a version of mame with the cave sh3 drivers added back in? They were removed from the official version of mame. You either have to add them in manually or download a pre built version.

I found a MAME Slow Poke edition that seems to support all the sh3 games. :applaud: Is that what you mean by a pre built version.  Can someone explain to me what these editions are (if there are multiple) and are there any advantages to adding the drivers to the most current version of MAME over the Slow Poke edition.
I found the sh3 driver text but it all seemed very complicated (I'm still learning).

Cave asked MAMEDev to remove the games from MAME (because they were still selling the hardware) and MAMEDev complied with the request.
It's not in the official MAME build anymore, nor is it in any of the previous builds available for download on MAMEDev.org

The code to run them was in one of the interem "u" updates.  The "u" updates require people to compile MAME from source code themselves.
Those who downloaded the interem source code and kept it can add it to newer MAME builds before compiling.
I had it, but deleted it before I knew anything had been removed from the following bulid.

Not that big of a deal.  I have three other variations of MAME from around the same time that can run them.
I just treat it like a different emulator.

So, from what I've gathered it's easier to just find an edition with the drivers. I'm just wondering the pro's and con's (having an OCD moment).
Do the MAMEdevs plan on reincorporating these drivers on future releases.... say as certain games go off the market or is this a permanent thing?

Also, are there other drivers that can be added to MAME to widen rom support or is this the only one?

Yes its easier to just find the newest mame version with the drivers added back in. They are floating around the internet, just have to search them out.

As to whether or not they will add them back in, who knows. Hopefully they do because the games themselves are really good. It would be nice to see the games get worked on a bit more because as it sits now they don't exactly play like their hardware versions. On the hardware versions of some of the shmup games when there are a ton of bullets on the screen the game will actually slow down and making it possible to maneuver through the patterns vs in mame the speed remains fast and you basically get slaughtered. Still playable and fun but a bit harder then the original game and not really how its supposed to be played.

As far as I know there aren't any other drivers that can be added back to make more games playable. There are things like ips collection for mame though. Also misfitmame.

IPS Collection is a huge collection of ROM hacks, to breathe new lives into cherished old games. IPS means "Impossible! Perfect! Superior!" MAME Plus! IPS Collection, Make your gaming life I.P.S.!

ROM hacking is the process of modifying a video game ROM image to alter the game's graphics, dialogue, levels, gameplay, or other gameplay elements. This is usually done by technically-inclined video game fans to breathe new life into a cherished old game. Once a hack is completed, it is released by making a patch that can be applied to the unmodified ROM.

Thought i replied to this. Thanks very much for the update, things are definitely running smoother now for cave games!

If there are future updates relative to cave sh3 emulation and mame compilings let me know! I struggled to get cave running to begin with and this is the first recompiling i was able to get running.
