Question about mounting speakers and LCD to cabinet
« on: February 15, 2013, 02:07:20 am »
Okay this is a weird question. How do I mount a LCD screen SPECIFICALLY in a Nintendo cabinet.
My second question is this, how do I set up speakers in my mame cabinet? Should I use the original speakers in the cabinet? And if so, how do I do that? If you recommend buying new speakers, what kind should I buy and how would I mount them inside the cabinet?

Sorry for so many questions, hopefully they all can be answered. Thanks in advance!!!!

Well, I'm not super familiar with the cabinet you are talking about, but think of mounting it no different than you would on a wall.  So for me I would get a wall mount mechanism, and then you could use a big 2x8 across the middle and mount the wall mechanism to it and then balance accordingly.

From a speaker perspective, typically you'll need an amp of some type to hook the speakers up to.  The speakers would then get power from the amp and the computer would send the audio signal to the amp.
This is the amp I typically use:

These are the speakers I typically use:

What an absolutely stellar idea! I knew there was a reason for joining this forum! I had a set of donor speakers (creative labs, so not too bad sounding) from an 04 machine I had about; but was having trouble thinking through how to mount them; I'd got to the point where I've got a shelf that I was going to hot glue them to, but I can't believe I didn't think of using a mini amp and some actual proper cab speakers! Job done! Will be ordered on Pay Day, only problem is, I have to order from e-bay as the seller doesn't do shipping from amazon :(

Oh well, great idea! Thanks for that, stolen and applied to my project!! :)

The speakers used to be $4 but now I see they've gone to ~8-9 so definitely scour eBay, I bet you could find similar ones for ~3-4 bucks.  That AMP is also quite powerful or the price, so you can always look for a smaller one too!  I love that one as it's been rock solid, but I bet you can find a cheaper one that works well too.

lol, the problem being; by the time postage is added to NZ, it's still about $30, so will probably just go down to Repco / Super Cheap / JB Hi-Fi or one of the other chains over here and pick up speakers, as for the amp, despite my best efforts, there are slim pickings from the local resellers (Jaycar & Surplustronics being the main contenders for anything like this) ... They have similar stuff, but for a higher price, and nothing that looks as well spec'd to me, so may just buy one off e-bay; found a seller who will include the 5amp adapter for better quality output too, including postage it's $47 USD from: http://www.ebay.com/itm/290534659322?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 Seems to have good enough feedback, so unless I can find somewhere better with better postage before tomorrow (payday) then I'll get this one!!

Found a set of decent speakers too; but much as I have knowledge in this area; a second opinion can't help: http://www.sony.co.nz/product/xs-gtf1027 obviously won't be buying them from Sony for that price, but have found them for $30 (NZD) which is the same as the ones you recommend work out to with postage to NZ; I can find cheaper, but not with the frequency response of the ones you've used, and obviously; you know the speakers well enough to say they're good enough for a cab... I reckon these should do it, and no postage involved anywhere, as JB Hi-Fi (a local chain) have them on special for $30 this week :)

That's the problem I've found living in NZ; in the UK / Europe / US, it's easy to get items as there's a large selection, and being relatively central in relation to postage terms, if you do have to order; then postage is cheap... Sadly; if there's a bright postage centre of the universe; New Zealand is the place it's furthest from :( But, I live here because it is awesome, so I have to deal with the high postage if I want to do project work of any sort... Which realistically is fine :) not many people even have their own cabs over here, which is one of the multitude of reasons I'm on here for ideas / help with things, and it means whatever I do will be reasonably unique even if I make generic cab x (which I'm trying not to) ... One of the companies I'm dealing with at present has even let me know I'm one of only 10 customers in the whole of NZ for the last year... Not that there's a huge population here, but even so, 10 is pretty low, and it's a well known company on here, but I was told that in what I would consider confidence as it was in an e-mail between myself and the company, so they shall remain nameless.

Speakers are speakers.  Look on craigslist or go to your local computer store and find the 5-10 buck computer speakers.  Remove them and re-use them.  Unless you want a specific size you have the world at your fingertips.  Don't also forget TV's people are throwing away, they have speakers inside them too!

Are you powering the amp by the ac adapter or from the pc power supply

I typically have a smart power strip inside the cabinet so I just use the AC adapter but you could easily use the PC Power supply.
