Wells Gardner D9800 and compatible video card

Guys,
I have this monitor and would like to know what video cards will work with it out of the box so I can see an image. The Ati hd4350 card (not onboard video) in my system only works if I use the ancient Catalyst drivers or I get a black screen or rolling image. Perhaps this has been fixed on newer Catalyst drivers recently?

I want to connect to the VGA port on the card if possible and not use any DVI converters.

Just set your OS to 640x480 (it's available in Windows without any hacks, but you have to call up "List all modes" to get it as an option).  You don't need any special hardware or tools to get a usable image, though there are some tricks you can play to potentially make your video look nicer when emulating arcade games by matching the emulated video exactly.

Thanks. Do you know if I will get 640 x480 if I update to the latest Catalyst drivers? I know they took a lot of resolutions out of the later release.

Been running desktop at 600x800 any reason not to use that rez?

I don't think the D9800 can do 800x600 at 60Hz.  You'd have to drop to 50Hz, and it'll flicker terribly.  If it can do it, then no reason not to use it if you want.  It may look a bit blurry, though.  The tube isn't really designed to resolve single-pixel lines (as used by normal desktop shells) at that res.

Wow, I didn't know that. Things do look blurry but things look so big at the other resolution. I guess I can try to reduce the size of icons and fonts, any other suggestions for giving more space to the things on the screen? I appreciate your help.

BTW, is that video card a good one or do I need a new one? I think I paid over $100 for it if I recall but it has been a while.
