MALA should work great, it is it nice light front end.
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Super Mario Bros (arcade hardware- light restore) Tetris Cocktail (SNES), Arcade Classics upright (60-in-1, then MAME), Multi-Raiden (arcade hardware). Pac Man vs.(Gamecube),

Working on: Pinball Re-theme, Homebrew arcade arena shooter

http://www.malafe.net/

The layout it comes with is horrible, but it's real easy to make your own using the layout editor.
You basically just make a background in photoshop and drag boxes where you want the various elements to appear.
(snapshot, video snaps, gamelist, marquee, etc)
Not real fancy, but you can pull off some slick looking layouts if you're good with a photoshop type program.
There are a few tricks to get just a little fancier, but not many.

There are also other layouts available for download on the Mala site.

Slowest PC I've run it on is a 600mhz celeron and it worked fine.   ;D

Before you try to figure out a new front end maybe try going into hyper hq and disabling the fancy stuff. At that point it would basically be just a list without the bling and see if that runs on the laptop or not.

Ok if you've already tried lowering the settings to the lowest and it still lags then obviously ya time for a new frontend. Just an FYI though you don't need the videos you can simply have screen shots instead. That's what I've done for a couple of games I can't find videos for.
