Mame Help - Tab key without a keyboard
« on: February 11, 2013, 02:15:09 pm »
Hi

I have a cabinet setup to use Hyperspin and all seems good. It has a touchscreen (mimicking a mouse) and no keyboard (just jumps straight into Hyperspin and then the joysticks and buttons on the control panel do the rest).

The problem I have has arisen when i went to play Robotron and find that the joysticks (it needs both) are not working within the game. I understand I need to configure specific games and use the tab key to access that menu in MAME. Trouble is I don't have a keyboard to do it with!

I guess I could reconfigure one of the buttons (say pause) to be tab but I don't know how to do that.

Any help gratefully received.

All the best.

Step 1:  Plug in a keyboard from another computer

Step 2:  Change your controls

Step 3:  Unplug keyboard and be happy.

You do so have a keyboard.... you typed this message didn't you?  ;)

Keyboards cost as little as a couple of bucks at this point.  Why do you think every single mame cab ever built has a keyboard stuffed in the coin door?

Also if you have joysticks then you obviously have other input methods.  If you didn't make an admin button I don't know how you expect to get into the menu without one.

You can easily remap the admin button from tab to something else, but you first have to press tab to bring up the menu.

Thanks for the reply.

Actually, I don't have a keyboard that will work - typing this on a bluetooth mac keyboard. The cabinet was purchased so I didn't put it together, hence its all a little new to me.

I'll go get a keyboard I suppose if thats the easiest way, but as I had supposed the I-PAC was mimicking one I just wondered if there was a simpler way.

All the best

Solved - I was unaware of the shift key function.

Thanks
