Vertical games on horizontal monitor
« on: February 09, 2013, 10:35:25 pm »
Hi all

This topic has probably been discussed at length, but I am struggling to find the answers.

I have a 25 inch arcade screen mounted horizontally, jpac and arcadeVGA card.
I am running a desktop res of 640x480 Windows XP, have tried a desktop 640x288 with the same results
I am using command line mame 0.148
Frontend Maximus arcade
I have run Gavin Bensons Res tool with good results except for on Vertical games.

On all vertical games the top and bottom of the game goes off the screen.  The only way I can see the whole game is to use hardware stretching which I don't really like the look of.  If I have to I can live with the hardware stretching if this is the only way.

I have tried all types of different resolutions.  I am changing the resolution in the ini file created by the resolution utility.  Every time the game goes off the screen.

I am I missing something simple here?

You probably have to use hw stretch or set your monitors vertical size every time. I'm using groovymame and have installed the v-size pot in my control panel.

If you are using native resolutions, try using 352x256, 352x264, or 352x288.  Although not optimal, you can also adjust the video options within each game to squeeze them in by adjusting the horizontal settings (horizontal because it is a vertical game on a horizontal monitor).   Most games will look good like this although with some (Frogger for instance) you will be forced to HW stretch.

if you are not too fussy, consider using interlace mode when displaying vertical games on a horizontal crt, as the blurring effect of interlace mode hides the visible stretching better than any native low res mode does.

eg. try running games like frogger or galaxian in 640x480 interlace, using hardware stretch... (as i say, if u are not too fussy....)
