WBFS manager. Transferring drive to drive
« on: February 02, 2013, 05:24:35 am »

This has got me beat. I transferred a file on a regular USB hard drive to my Wii hard drive a couple of weeks back. Now I can't  :banghead:  I get this message:

error occurred while loading drive.Make sure the drive is not in use or open and that it has been formatted to WBFS format.

I don't understand what this means. How on earth did I do it before? As far as I can see it is not in use or open...

Is it formatted fat, ntfs or wbfs? I prefer fat, mostly because you can drag n drop rather than using wbfs programs. For files larger than 4gb just use a manager to split the files.

Ohh and try a different usb cable, had one that wasn't giving enough current to a hdd and took me ages to figure it out, drive would light up but windows couldn't read it.

I'd recommend going away from WBFS format.  There's no need for it anymore.  You won't need to set aside an entire partition or an entire HDD itself just for it.  If you still utilize WBFS, there's stuff out there to convert back to .iso, I just don't remember what it's called.  It's not hard to find, and the only thing you really have to do once you've converted is create a WBFS folder on your newly FAT or NTFS formatted drive, and put the games in there.  There's plenty of step-by-steps out there.  Best to just take a weekend like this one and let the pc sit for a few hours while it converts everything.  Wii Backup Manager is what you'll need to do your transferring.  Very user friendly and capable.

That's great, but all my games are on a wbfs format hard drive, which I got from someone else. The one game I added I was able to do drive to drive using wbfs loader. Now I can't. I would actually rather find out how to copy my save files for Call of Duty:World at War and Monster Hunter Tri and put it on another Wii. I don't care to have any more  games than I have, just that the disk drive failed on my Wii. All this USB Loader malarky is just another layer of annoyance to something that should be simple and enjoyable...

edit: just re-read your post. So I should ditch wbsfsfdsjhcvxhz manager and use Wii Back Up manager? I'll give that a go. Meanwhile, if anyone knows how to retrieve save files, I'm all ears (",)

Well are we talking real save files, or emulated save files?

The real save files you can pull off the wii's internal memory on a sd card via the config menu on your wii.  If you were using a loader to save files to your external harddrive, how to retrive them depends upon what loader you were using and what level of IOS emulation (if any) you were using.

Real save files, for real Wii games  :dunno  You can't simple copy an online capable games save file on wii unfortunately

heh... decryption was a problem... like 5 years ago.

There's a save game extractor app available as well for those problem games.  Just put it on your wii.  I think there is a pc version as well, but I don't remember the name.

I don't get it. The only help I can find on what I downloaded is here:

http://www.ehow.com/how_8783914_install-savegame-manager-gx.html

I can't even get past step 2, because I don't see 'homebrew browser'! I'm guessing I just have to have the file (R127.dol) on the SD card? I don't understand why there is so much guesswork involved with hacking a wii. I have the homebrew channel installed by the way, and am able to play games using USB loader. ---fudgesicle--- Nintendo for making the saves so hard to get

There isn't any guess work, you simply need the ability to use google and to read. ;)  You are looking at an article that is likely several years old.

http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Savegame_Manager

p.s.  You go to wiibrew to get wii homebrew, it's the "official" site.  There are other save game managers as well, so browse the site.

I had a bit of a 'doh' moment when I watched some dodgy youtube clip and realised I should be putting the app in the 'apps' folder  ;D  Still doesn't work though, and my homebrew channel looked like his homebrew channel. I still say it's guesswork when the original authors instructions are 'run the application'. I openly admit that I'm a retard with this stuff, but surely I'm not the only one who needs to have his hand held with this stuff? Mame32 was much better thought out, these young 'uns making this stuff now just don't know how good it was in the good old days, ten years ago  ;D

edit: I feel like a bit of a detective trying to find the basics. Here's a French youtube clip that has given me the latest clue:

In it, I see 'homebrew browser' in the homebrew channel, which I don't see on mine. I wonder if that got left out in the install? The investigation continues...

edit: Looks like homebrew browser is a separate app. This is the sort of thing that is irking me, why is everything so disparate? Anyway, that is now in the app folder. And I've found out how to see the other apps, I have both save game types in there, your one and mine (which is only a few days since being released). Trying to launch anything (homebrew channel, both save games) just gets me 'error launching app'. Sigh...

edit: I asked the same question on another forum, here's the answer, I'll see if that does the trick

Quote
The Homebrew Browser is literally the first screen of the Homebrew Channel, you don't have to click on anything to get to it. If you have the .dol file (it needs to be called boot.dol) in a folder on the SD card, the program will show up fine.

So, create a folder on the SD card called apps\savegamemanager or something like that. Then throw the .dol file in the savegamemanager folder and name it boot.dol.

I haven't hacked a wii in ages, but I am pretty sure you put .dol files in the apps folder. Always make sure the file is called boot.dol or the wii will not detect it.

That should get you going.

It did the trick! Are all the developers 13 years old or something? How am I supposed to know you need to change the name of the .dol file?  Anyway, now I have it up and running, it's time to figure out how to use it...

It's common knowledge to anybody who has ever installed anything on the homebrew channel.

Your comment is equivelent to "how was I supposed to know that I had to run cmd.exe, and type mame.exe mk2 to run Mortal Kombat II?"  ;)

Fair point. Still, it would be nicer to have clearer instructions than 'run application'  :D

Actually, no. I was talking about mame32. You don't have to do any of what you said  ;)

It turns out that I might have to downgrade my SD card to a 1Gb to make it work though. At the moment it just points to USB8:/  automatically when I want to save files, and a quick google tells me the 4Gb card might be the problem...

Points to SD now, but I still can't see the file. I'm pretty sure I'll figure it out now. Thanks for your patience (",)

Even with mame32, there are people flabbergasted that the "games" don't come with the emulator, so the point still stands.

Just remember that on the wii you want to put the saves on, you have to run the game in question and create a save file.  Basically what this app does is use the key generated by your wii to inject the data into an existing save file.

I'm amazed you somehow hacked your Wii, but don't have the homebrew browser.  Hackmii will get that sucker where it should be.

The homebrew channel is what you use to peruse your installed programs.  Homebrew browser is the application that is used to browse the internet homebrew site where you can download bunches of new apps straight from and to your Wii.  If you truly don't have the browser, you should definitely get it on there.  Helps you keep up to date on new apps and updates.

Funnily enough, that is one of the things I do know about it. I don't yet have another wii, just keeping my options open. Might as well save my saves BEFORE it's too late  ;D

I'm amazed you somehow hacked your Wii, but don't have the homebrew browser.

Yeah. A programmer friend of mine told me once I would be a great beta tester. He meant it as a compliment, but it really means is that if there is a way to screw up a piece of software, I'll find that way  ;D
