MAMEwah layouts question
« on: November 03, 2003, 01:52:11 pm »
I recently upgraded to MAMEwah ver. 0.962 from 0.954.  In doing so, I had to delete all my old config. files and start over.  While resetting all paths, etc. I tried setting my layouts path to exactly as it was before, and now I get a "runtime error 380" message.  The layouts are the same as they were before the upgrade--same folder, same location.  Is there something else I need to do so that the layout folder with all of the my emulator layouts in it can be recognized in the new MAMEwah version?
As said, the folder itself did not change at all from the past version.  I am wondering why it wont work the same with the new version.  BTW, I am using Win98SE.
Thanks.

You say 'layouts path' - are you entering a path?  You only need to enter the layouts 'name', eg 'Classic 640x480' (ie no folders or filenames).

Read 'Layouts.txt' that came with the v0.962 update, it should clarify a little.

From memory, you may need to rename your background images, apart from that I *think* all is more or less the same as back in v0.954...

Let me know if it doesn't work still...

Minwah,

No, I dont have the actual path--I should have worded that differently.  I have a folder called 1024x768 inside the layouts folder and it is that name that I put into the layouts path in MAMEwah--it worked fine for 0.954.  I changed nothing--just kept the folder exactly the same from that version to 0.962 and in the same location (path).  You mentioned you may have to rename background images--in what way?  What would I have to rename them too?  Sorry, didnt read the readme, but thought it would be exactly the same as 0.954.  Thanks for any other thoughts--really mystified by this one.

Hmmm  ???

Make sure your .LAY file is called just 'layout.lay', and images I think need to be called 'main.???', 'options.???', 'message.???' etc.  (I don't think incorrectly named images would cause a crash anyway).

I can't think of anything else atm...read the latest Layouts.txt to check what changed since v0.954.

What layout are you using btw?  Try downloading Layouts.zip from my site and try those...

Minwah,

I have my files listed as, for example, MAME:  emu1.lay, emu1-main.jpg, emu1-art1.jpg, emu1-art2.jpg, etc.  Other emulators are emu2.lay, emu2-main.jpg, etc.  This worked perfect for 0.954, but now I get a 'runtime error 380' when using 0.962.  Any ideas what I could be missing or doing wrong?  I did recently add another harddrive and reloaded by Win98SE, but not sure if that could have caused any problems.  Thanks for any help.

OK try this:

Open MAMEWAH.CFG and alter the Layout Name to something that should definately work (ie 'Classic 640x480').

Then run MAMEWAH (hopefully it should run OK).  Now alter the Layout Name from MW's Options menu.  If MAMEWAH doesn't accept the name you enter, then something must be named wrong...if it does accept it, see if it crashes (& at what point).

If still no joy, email me the layout(s) you are using so I can try them (please email me first if it is going to be >500kb).

I was getting the same error message as you when I tried using custom layouts on a friends computer.  I tried everything but finally I opened the custom layouts .lay file in the mamewah skin designer and resaved it and it worked perfect.

I can confirm what Patch said.  When updating Mamewah, my layouts didn't display.  So I went into the editor and checked that all the components were set right.  I saved them again and everything worked after that.

I just went through this for a second time. 3 things to do (in addition to what has been recommended above):

1. Check the layout.lay file and make sure the path to the image is correct
2. make sure you don't have any unnecessary background images (like main.jpg) in your directory because mamewah might try to use it (this was my problem)
3. Do a "save as" for your layout and pick the right one. For some reason, when I opened up one layout and just clicked save - it didn't seem to save to the correct layout...but this could have been me. Just a recommendation.

I did the above 3 things on top of everything else and finally got mine to work.

Mamewah is an awesome FE - I love it...but it took me hours of fiddling with it to really appreciate it. I hated it when I first tried it because of the un-user friendly install/setup process...but I realize now that it does so much more than just mame, and thus the reason for the added complexity.
5 MAME cabs and counting...

Ever wonder what full side art looks like?
